Just getting my new build tested and stable. I do have a problem though. If it sits for more than 2 hours and I try to start it, it will freeze during start-up. All I have to do is hit the reset button and everything starts fine without a problem. Has anybody been through this? What are some things to check to fix it? I have updated my drivers for all my hardware and software (as far as I know) I noticed the BIOS version for the motherboard is rather old...there are several new BIOS editions available. I am nervous about installing a new BIOS, I have never done it! Does anybody know what this could be?

    Xion II case
Antec Neo Power 650w SLI ready
    Intel Q9300
    CoolerMaster Hyper TX2 CPU cooler
Asus P5K-E motherboard (BIOS Revision 0608) there are 6 newer versions:(
    Corsair XMS2 4 x 1 GB RAM
Evga 8800 GTX (waiting for my 9800 GTX from EVGA step-up program)
    WD 160 GB x2
    Microsoft® Windows Vista™ Home Premium w/ service pack 1

    Hi

Your not Overclocking are you or using the ASUS Overclock AI tools? if you are reset to defaults.

If you just have 2 sticks of ram in ( so 2GB ) does your PC boot ok?

You have mentioned Vista, but is it 32bit or 64bit version used?

While I generally will not advise a BIOS update if things are going well, however yours is not and the fix may well be the updated BIOS as your Q9300 CPU is only fully supported from BIOS version 1012

P5K-E The following table shows the support for CPU / Motherboard

If you wish to see this info need to enter http://support.asus.com/cpusupport/cpusupport.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&model=P5K-E

Search for CPU using ~ Motherboard
    Type ~ Socket 775
    Name ~ P5K-E

then you will see long list, find your Q9300 CPU

I flashed my ASUS the other day with util thats for my mobo from thr EZFlash option in thr Bios itseld ( popped BIOS rom file onto USB *needed to be a fat32 formated usb* )and went ok, just DO NOT shut off PC as its flashing.

Nothing is overclocked and all BIOS is set to default. It does not boot with only 2 sticks in, does the same thing. I am running Vista Home Premium 64 bit. I think I will go with your recommendation with a BIOS update I did some research about the 1013 BIOS and it supports the 45nm quads. I read about the ezflash and it sounds pretty easy. I will give it a try this weekend! Thanks for the help:major

    Hi

Yes very likely as you have a new CPU and the bios you have originally wont have its signature applied may just not fire up all the time.

As you have new sticks and 4 of them, outside chance is that the ram may be faulty, happened to me this week, adding 2 new sticks of 1GB XMS2 and both new ones are faulty, so maybe the thing to run a memtest as well to rule out bad ram, I used this one http://www.majorgeeks.com/Memtest86_d4226.html ( ISO format for a bootable CD is on the developers homepage ) then only have 1 stick of ram in at a time and boot to the floppy or CD to run the test.

I have already conducted several RAM tests and everything is ok. I have an Antec Neo Power 650w SLI power supply, it's about 2 months old. Some people have told me to replace the power supply, I don't think it's that. It cost me $130 the thing better not be bad! My brother in law is a computer programmer and is coming down this weekend for the kickoff of the Europe football championship. We live in Germany and my wife's family is crazy about football. He said he will update my bios for me and we'll go from there. Thanks for taking the time and helping me!
