Computer Randomly Shuts Off

My computer won't run in normal mode; it only works in safe mode. Whenever I try to boot in normal mode, the computer completely shuts off. There's no error message, no bsod, the computer just shuts off. I have a feeling it's the drivers, specifically the ati video card drivers, however, every time I try to install the drivers I get an error message. I even used driver sweeper, but to no avail.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Most of the problems associated with a computer shutting down can be toed to heat.
Open the computer up and clean it thoroughly inside. Make sure all cables are firmly seated. If you suspect the video card is the problem, remove it and try to boot in normal mode without it. What happens?

I don't think the problem is heat related. Heat was the first thing I thought about as well. However, even if I leave the computer off for several hours and try to boot it in normal mode, the computer shuts off almost immediately (within 30 seconds after login). Also, the computer runs in safe mode 24 hours a day with no problems.

Also, I would rather not start with removing the video card because in order to do that I would have to completely disassemble the entire laptop. I don't want to do this and then find out that it was all for naught. Therefore, I would like to make sure that's the problem. Do you have any other suggestions for how I can find out if the video card is indeed the problem? Can't the problem just be fixed by re-installing the appropriate drivers?

You should have mentioned in your first post that this was a laptop!
Laptops don't have video cards; they have chips on the motherboard.

You need to mention the brand and exact model of the laptop as well as the version of windows you are running and service packs.

Have you tried last known good configuration?

Sorry about that. My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite L645d-S4036. I'm running Windows 7 64-bit, Service Pack 1.

I've tried last known good configuration and system restore (twice). Nothing has worked. I boot the system in normal mode and within 30 seconds of getting past the login screen, the computer turns off.

Here's the driver pages for your model Satellite and 64 bit Win 7 (74 drivers)
    Code:

The only thing remotely close is on page 3, Driver Display and that is from 2010.
Are you perhaps trying to install or have installed something that is not intended for your computer?
The drivers are not loaded in safe mode so that would account for it working in safe mode.

No, I'm talking about the drivers for the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250. I haven't been able to install those drivers while in safe mode.

However, like I said before, I'm still not absolutely certain that this is the problem. Is there any way to verify that this is indeed the problem, and is there a way to figure out what else might be the problem?

Where did you get the driver? If you downloaded it from anywhere but the Toshiba site, it is not the proper driver.

The video is part of the motherboard. I see no motherboard/chipset drivers listed.
I put chipset driver in the search field and that brought up over 500 entries and from the few I looked at, did not refer to your model.

You might ask a question in the Toshiba forum

I got the drivers directly from the amd website. Here: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx

After typing the relevant information into the fields, it takes me here: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/legacy/Pages/legacy-radeonaiw-vista64.aspx

Also, can you please give me suggestions on how I might find out what other things are causing the problem I'm experiencing?

Did you click on "Automatically detect and install"?

Yes. I've tried manually downloading and using "automatically detect and install". No matter how many times I try, I get an error saying, "failed to load detection driver."

    Have you tried this:

    http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/...4036&selCategory=2756709&selFamily=1073768663

Select your OS, and the category "Display".

Boot into "Safe Mode with Networking", download the package to a folder, uninstall component and software while in Safe Mode (programs list and Device Manager), then reboot normally, and install the driver package which you saved while in Safe Mode. It may work, may not.

I doubt this is a driver issue.

When onboard video goes bad on a laptop, a symptom is running in safe mode and powering off in normal mode.

Safe Mode puts no stress on GPU, and uses a UGA driver. You can try this:

disable the video card from device mangler in safe mode and see if it boots to normal mode. It will disable any type of hw acceleration, but might work for you.

When I attempt to uninstall the Driver Display in device manager, it asks me if I also want to delete the software. Should I select yes? or select no?

    Select "Yes".

And, if that doesn't work Adrynalyne is probably, and unfortunately for your laptop on the right track.
