    Hey gguys.

I'm a senior in high school, and planned on going to college/tech institute for a carrer in computers. I had originally planned on going for computer networking. Well, we had to start moving fast in looking for schools etc.

As I was in school today, my dad searched the web for schools (I want to stay locally for now). He then searched for the top computer jobs. According to him, there aren't very many networking jobs availible, and if there are, you need like 7 years experience. He did say that a Software Engineer is POPULAR these days.

I was wondering if any of you guys know about this? Or have a iste which shows the top computer jobs . . .

Originally I was going to go straight to school for computer from high school. Now my dad thinks it's best that I go to a state university, graduate with a college diploma, then go to like a Tech Institute . .. of course taking different computer courses in the state university.

Can anyone help me out here?

    Much appreciated.

    Jnick

I went to a tech school and they will tell you the IT field is dead right now. They expected it to pick up but it really hasn't. And be prepared to face stiff competition on any IT job. I too wanted to get into the networking side of it but be prepared because school will require you to learn programing all the way up to C++ advanced and trust me it is no picnic. I myself hate programing but you must do it all for the degree. And most places expect you to do it all. I am more into the PC repair or networking field but have not had that lucky break yet. Good luck to what ever you choose....

I don't know the specifics of your situation but going away to college for 4 years can be a great option especially if the computer/tech school isn't so hot right now (due to the job market). College isn't for everyone, but it definately has its advantages.
Think of it this way; it will buy you time, you can take (or even major in computer sciences, etc) computer related classes, meet people from all over the state/country/world, develop networking skills (as in meeting others), and partake in plenty of college fun activities. :)

    Just some food for thought.

I have several friends that are recent grads in IT related fields. The job market is tight, and those that graduated from technical schools such as ITT tech seem to have an easier time obtaining jobs. Plus at least at the college I graduated at there wasn't enough choices for IT degrees. I think that colleges need to focus more on the various IT components and offer more specialized degrees which would be more valuable. Most companys don't really want someone who did almost all thier studies in C++ anymore.
