    Hi Im currently running
XP PRO with an Athalon AMD 1.73 GHz Processor and k7 Triton Motherboard.

Ive had the PC for about 3 years and had little problems until recently when I got a virus. A friend who has a degree in IT looked at it and said he had to go into DOS to get it going again? It has worked perfectly well for the last 2 months, but this week I have been having problems.

The machine has begun restarting itself. It usually happens when I try to do something like delete or save a file, or try to move a file. The only time that it consistently does it is when I try to burn a CD. The seccond the CD begins to burn, the machine immediately reboots itself.

Ive also had a weird message saying something about guru meditation and also today my Winamp suddenly changed to the old Winamp interface for no apparent reason.

When Windows reboots, I am told that the system has recovered from a serious error and get these messsages when I ask for more details.

    C:\DOCUME~1CHRISLOCALS~1\TEMP\WERa3b2.dir00\MINI052605-14.DMP
    C:\DOCUME~1CHRISLOCALS~1\TEMP\WERa3b2.dir00\sysdata.xml

Any help will be most appreciated.

    Thanks.

    some software is causing this...
    first off do this;
system properties > advanced > startup and recovery properties > untick 'reboot automatically'

that'll keep the comp from rebooting all the time, it'll just be slow for a minute or so.

secondly try uninstalling as many programs as you can and see if the problem goes away. if it does then reinstall one program at a time to see if the problem reoccurs. when it does you got your answer.

    Thats a little extreme, no?

You can get a better idea of the problem by debugging the memory dump.

As for your IT friend, you might want to let him know that there is no DOS in 2000/XP :)

Yes there is! Recovery Console (looks like dos to me!) and uhhh cmd prompt (looks like dos to me!)..... :)

Yes, I know it isn't dos, but the windows shell. Speaking of shell. Have you seen the new net framework 2.0 with wsh? WSH is very very nice.

    LOL.

Nah I've not seen the new .net framework.

I know so little of that stuff I probably wouldn't recognize it anyway :p
