Today my computer has started rebooting on it's own. The first time it happened earlier this evening I thought it was a isolated incident. However It happened two more times since then. I am currently in safe mode trying to see if it happens in this mode to it interrupted a AVG scan I was doing. So now I have to do it again and I don't know how to work it's command line scanner. In either case I disabled the "Automatic restart in the hopes of getting a BSOD next time but they don't seem to occur. I'm praying it's only malware. Is there any programs out their that allow me to do a good test of hard components because I have no money and no spare components for my system.

Random shutdowns are usually due to heat, bad Power Supply Unit, or bad RAM. I would clean out the heatsinks and fans (ask if you are not sure how), and then when you restart it, make sure all your fans are spinning.

    Test your RAM: http://majorgeeks.com/Memtest86_d4226.html

Check your temperatures. There are several programs for monitoring temps, here are a couple: Core Temp http://majorgeeks.com/Core_Temp_d5665.html

Everest (also has other good stuff) http://majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

Also, can you list the specs of your computer? Operating System, desktop or laptop, type of CPU, RAM, PSU...?

It isn't shutting down, it is rebooting which is another matter entirely. It would be nice to see an error code to narrow down a few possible causes.

If it were my computer, I'd disconnect from the internet, stop the tray programs and look in Task manager to see if there was anything else I could shut down. Then run your AVG scan.

    Hi

Random reboots would generally have me thinking temp issues, but if its not rebooting in safe mode then this narrows down possible new update/application, so use msconfig and disable all startups and if on with all disabled, enable one at a time to find culprit.

The random reboots have stopped she's been up for about 24 hours now and not one reboot. I merely did some AV scans and updated my OS with the fixes available. However I plan to look at those program links especially the one that monitors temp. I made a HiJackThis log in case it was requested later on but it doesn't look like it was needed now. AVG found nothing but 1 false positive and a bunch of minor threats. I don't know.
