    Hi There,

This is my first post here and would really appreciate if anyone would be able to help on this!

Ok here it is. I have a desktop pc which cannot start at all. It gets stuck in the black screen with windows xp loading and then switches off. When I restart in safe mode the system is running without shutting down. After restarting I manage to login in windows but after about 5 min it shits down again.

I have formated my drive and also tried a different hard drive but same thing. Bought a new psu, changed the memories, dismantled the whole thing (took out processor and mobo) and cleared all the dust from the fans but still no result.

Getting a bit desperate so thought that maybe someone would have any other ideas I could try before buying a new mobo.

I'm thinking it's the motherboard or hard drive.

Take a look at your CPU fan and heat sink. Sounds like a heat problem to me. When it runs for a while, then shuts down, heat can do that.

Have a close inspection of your capacitors on your motherboard... see any slight bulges or tea/coffee like stain on top or corrosion, sounds similar to a rather too common issue with capacitors from several years back.

I had this on an Asus mobo and very similar sounding problem, may also have a micro fine crack somewhere on the mobo, and the issue becomes apparent under heat or load. So in safe mode the mobos not under such a heavy load so allows to boot but when under normal load resets, resets, resets ...at xp is loading logo..for me it was anyway.

did the issue just happen or was it every now and again it would just reset then with more frequency until you just couldnt get into windows anymore?

Also sometimes pays to take out the cmos battery for upto 24 hours and ram while your at it. Handle with care.

Hope the caps are o.k and good luck with this one.:wave
