Computer sloooooooow downnnn

hi guys, I was just wondering how much computer components wear overtime and how much. I have a pentium 4 processor rated at 2 ghz which is running at 2.7 ghz. This is how I bought it from the store. everything in the computer seems to run at a snails pace, I was wondering if I need to maybe reformat the hard drive, but it's a store computer and it has all of our data on it. I dunno if this is the right fourm to put this in, i just didn't know where else to go.

 

I doubt it's hardware, more likely to be software related.

More information, like operating system, PC specs etc would be helpful.

specs are intel pentium 4 - 2.0ghz @ 2.7 ghz, 512 mb of ram, win xp home. any other specs u want?

 

If you can post the log, it may point something out.

A harddrive cleanup and defrag will also help and check you have at least 15% free space on the drive,how long have you had the comp and when did you notice the slowdown,a 700mhz overclock on a 2ghz chip!,that sounds a little harsh

I have just recently done a defrag and cleaned up everything I could... coule it be because of windows and how it just seems to slow down overtime?? oh ya, btw the hard drive isn't even half full

 

A lot of things can cause it to go slow, including an infection of some kind.

Is it slow at booting, shutting down, or general use?

Please provide as much information as possible, as it's extremely difficult to diagnose the problem via the Internet.


One thing that puzzles me is that you say it's 2 GHZ running at 2.7 GHZ, and that's how you purchased it?

That's a pretty big increase. Also, looking at your Everest report, I don't think the FSB is set up OK in the Bios.

It states 2666 MHz (20 x 133), which doesn't sound right for a P4?

Do you know what the actual speed of this processor is supposed to be?

 

yup that's what it is running at... supposed to be 20 x 100 = 2000 mhz. ahh, basically it's slow all over, booting, opening applications, such as the internet and excel, and it's also slow shutting down. So I dunno, I just noticed it being extremely slow lately, even tho it is only running at 2.7ghz, GAH! I hate pentium. AMD 4 LIFE! anyways, thanks for the help. any more info would be greatly appreaciated.

 

Is it slow in safe mode? I notice you have 100% CPU utilization, so there is probably some program(spyware?) running in the background causing it to slow down. I really doubt it has to do with the fact it's a pentium.

 

haha, well it's a pentium 2.0... so it's junk, lol. ummm. everest was using 100% of the cpu while making that information file. so I dunno, I'm pretty sure the computer is spyware free cause I use all the right progams, like mozilla, adware, and what not, and rarely download anything, but I guess I could run the spyware thread tomorrow and work on that, and see if that helps... and then if I don't notice anything I will post a HJT log for someone to look at... I'll post after I'm done that... thanks
