Computer slowdown after back from standby

Recently, after I turn my laptop back on after standby mode, I can't seem to get anything working. The mouse moves just fine, but I can't get anything to start running, not even the task manager... well, without waiting 5 minutes for it to load up. The one time I did get the task manager up, it said most of the CPU was used up by the process "System".

Anyway, when I looked up all this in the Event Viewer tool, there were two errors I came across:

With the second one, I haven't used my printer/scanner in a few months, and it isn't connected to my laptop right now, either.

My laptop is a Dell 8200, 1.6 Mhz, 256 RAM, XP Home. I thought the problem was related to a recent installation of avast! antivirus, but nothing changed when I uninstalled it, though I did run a spyware and virus scan before I posted this. For that, I used AVG, Ad-Aware, and Microsoft Anti-Spyware.

If you aren't using your printer/scanner at present, try removing it from your system and see if this corrects your problem. :)

Uninstalled the printer and printer software from computer and restarted comp, but when I went into standby and came back, the problem came up again. Is there any other info I can give to help?

I suggested removing the printer/scanner because some of the LexMark software tries to install itself as a server, and I thought that could possibly be your problem. Apparently it wasn't.

Did this start after any particular update? Have you defragged your hard drive lately?

I defragged maybe 2 weeks ago, and the most recent thing I've updated was Roxio Easy CD Creator 5. I just noticed another odd thing on my computer, just in case someone knows something about this too, or if it is somehow related. I have two disc drives; DVD drive on D:\, the CD-RW on E:\... but recently I've been seeing an F:\ drive.

Generic DVD-ROM SCSI CdRom Device. The computer says that the device is working properly, though it doesn't exist at all. I've removed it from the device manager a couple times, but no luck. Doesn't show up in BIOS, but it just keeps on coming back. I might even say these two things started happening around the same time, actually.

Also, I would also like to point out that the error message regarding the Lexmark scanner device came up the last time I came back from Standby, even though I thought that I uninstalled all Lexmark things from my computer. Maybe it does have something to do with Lexmark?

Update: Problem is still going on, but I usually just put my laptop into hibernate mode when I need to put my computer away for a few hours.

Also, I'm still curious about the extra DVD drive that keeps appearing in My Computer.

I just can't seem to get rid of it, but I'm not sure why it's coming back.

It is possible that both your problems are connected. The nonexistent drive is probably a virtual drive installed by your Roxio update, and it could be their Direct CD ( believe that is what is called ) software is causing problems. Will research this futher in the morning, as I'm on my way to work just now!

Sorry to take so long in replying, but just got home from work. One thing that I did forget to ask you was what Service Pack level that you are at. I went to Roxio's site and visited their support forum for EZCD 5. It is not officially supported for XP, but according to the forum, it can be coaxed to run on XP upto SP1. SP2 is a no go. I realize that there are exceptions to every rule, and some people may be running it fine with no problem. So it could be that EZCD Creator 5 is the source of all your problems. Hope this helps! :)

Yes, I am using SP2 right now. I uninstalled the Roxio, restarted the comp, and then my Standby mode works just like it used to! I guess it's time to look into a more compatible CD burner. The only curious thing is why the extra drive is still there, though I uninstalled the driver and restarted again... but it doesn't seem to be doing anything wrong to me, and both of my real drives are working fine.

Thanks a ton for your help! If you have any ideas about that extra drive, it would be great, but it doesn't really bother me too much, but I don't like to see small problems turn into big ones. Not that I won't keep looking around for solutions online, anyway. Thanks!

Glad to hear that fixed your problem! As for the virtual drive, you might try downloading CCleaner from the downloads section (drive cleaners) and choose the scan for issues option and it may clean your registry and do away with the virtual drive. Might also check the Add/Remove programs section to see if any of the Roxio programs are still there! :)
