computer speakers for desktop pc

I recently got a new desktop pc. It is a Dell XPS 8700 running Windows 8.1 64 bit system with 8GB of RAM. The specs state for audio:
    Sound Devices
    NVIDIA High Definition Audio
    Realtek High Definition Audio
    Bluetooth Audio Device

This desktop has 6 ports in the rear and there are 2 ports in the front - one for audio and one for a mic.

I have an old pair of speakers that came with my first computer (that would make them about 15 years old.). They do still work, but are very faint with this new computer if I am trying to listen to a radio station online. They do work for the sounds for the applications with no problem. However, I like to listen to the radio while online and it stinks for that. It is 2 speakers that connected to the one audio port on the older desktop computers.

I would like to get a set of speakers to be able to listen to the radio without it sounding like a transistor radio; but I am not looking for stereo sound - just a decent sounding pair of speakers. Heck, even if they were decent like the ones that are in my gateway M1629 laptop I would be happy.

I have been looking around and realized that there are so many different options now a days. I also realized that I may need to also plug them into an electrical outlet or one of the usb ports to power them. I don't really want to have to worry about remembering to shut off the speakers when I shut down the computer each night (if at all possible) but I also don't have a lot of money to spend on speakers and as I said I am not looking for surround sound (nor do I have that much room for speakers on the desk).

Just want something decent - nothing fancy needed.

Never thought it would be so difficult (complicated) to simply get a pair of speakers to plug into a desktop computer.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks !

Ever consider a flat monitor that has speakers?

I bought my husband a refurbed Dell Optiplex. With my eMachine computer, I got a 21" or 22" monitor. I hooked that up to my husband's desktop and ran the speaker wire from the monitor to his computer.

He doesn't stream radio so I can't tell how that would sound.

Advantage, no extra power plug needed and when the monitor turns off, so does the sound.

I do have a fairly new monitor (HP S2031) but it does not have built in speakers on it. Got the monitor about a year or 2 ago and it is in like new condition but that is something to consider.
    Thanks for that idea :)

That sounds great, but I am not looking for something that large. I just need some decent speakers (nothing fancy) and I don't have lots of room for putting them and they are pretty big and elaborate for what I need.

WOW, thanks plodr. I guess I must have looked right past that information. those are a bit taller than the old original speakers I had but the bigger problem for me is the depth and width. I should be able to fit those in (would prefer a bit smaller, but if these are a decent speaker I just might go with them)

    Thanks for the information :)

I really hadn't thought to do that, but a very good point!

I really didn't want anything fancy or large - just a basic pair of speakers (don't need the 5.1 stuff - although this computer does have the ports for all of that) that aren't going to sound like a transistor radio when listening to the online radio stations.

I would really like to keep the cost under $50 since I am on a limited income and don't have money to spare.

I do have a pair of Sony SRS-T77 speakers that I use to use with a small cd player that I have plugged into the pc now. They are actually considered Travel Speakers for a Walkman, with 4watts, Mega Bass, stereo, ac/dc (information for the original packaging and yes for whatever reason I still have that outer piece of packaging) Anway, the problem is that I either have to keep them plugged into an electrical outlet or put batteries into it, I have to remember to turn them off and on and I had to get an extension cable to be able to plug them into the audio port and be able to use the electrical outlet. They are now on the floor since that is the easiest place to put them in relation to the electrical outlet and being disabled it is hard to bend down to turn them on and off each day which is why I would just like a decent pair of speakers that I can plug into the audio port and have them turn on and off when I turn on the computer and off when I turn it off. Even if they would also have to be plugged into a usb port would be fine since I have lots of those available on the computer.

    Thanks again :)

Labtec are good. I have a basic set of them and they work fine. :)

Thanks for the reply. I will look into finding a pair of labtec speakers for the computer. If I listened to the radio or cd's in the cd/dvd drive all the time I would look into something better - but for what I need them for I really can't see spending a lot of money.

    Thanks Again and Happy Holidays!

I listen to a lot of Podcasts and now and then Music CD's. I also play games sometimes. They are fine for all of this. :)

    lmhjcr...

Have you considered a speaker bar? I have a Logitech AudioHub. The sound is amazing, and it has 3 usb ports on the bar. I like it most because the range is so good. They always sound good, no matter how high I turn up the volume. I can't really turn them up though, because they are very loud for the size.

Google the reviews. Everybody loves this thing. It is really good for the money, and the size is nice.

You may have to work to find this for $50, but I think you might be able to find it...

Here is the best deal I could find. Great deal with the keyboard:
