This is a general question rather than a specific problem. The start-up time for my computer is 40.4 seconds. Is that a respecable speed or is it slow? If it's slow is it too slow?

I timed it from the moment I logged on to my user account until all the software that runs at satrt up had done its thing.

    It's a one-off time. I haven't checked it a number of times and calculated a mean.

My PC is an Acer Aspire 5920.

My OS is Windows Vista HP SP2

I suppose when you wake up your in top gear ready to go, what does it matter if it takes 5min to load you can't possibly be in that much of a hurry, I have just built a new setup and it takes nearly 3min to load, the reason is it does a lot of updating before it's ready to go, 40seconds if fast as far as I'm concerned. download winpatrol (@MG) and see what's loading at start up.
    Have fun

If you are booting from a hard disk I'd say 40 sec is pretty good, but if it's an SSD then it's pretty carp. There is an enormous number of factors that can affect boot times but I'd say just don't worry about it unless it becomes unacceptable - like more than two minutes.

What is the capacity of your Ram even what is the free capacity of your hdd ? You can go to Start - Run msconfig - Ok at Startup tab you have to Disable all - Apply - ok , you have to restart your machine to save your configurations :wave

I'm running Vista Ultimate and I found the time to desktop a little annoying. I found a site on speeding up Vista boot time and after clearing the Prefetch folder (Start -> Type prefetch in the search box -> click on prefetch in results pane to open the folder -> select an item by clicking on it -> press Ctrl+A to select all (including Readyboot folder)-> press Delete key -> confirm action).

    Then do the following:

    Manual Registry Tweak
Open regedit.exe through the start menu search or run box and browse down to the following key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\
    Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters

Find the EnablePrefetcher key on the right-hand pane, double click on it and change the value to one of these:

    • Disable Caching: 0
    • Cache Applications Only: 1
    • Cache Boot Files Only: 2
    • Cache Everything (default): 3
You’ll have to restart your computer before this takes any effect.

It made a considerable difference. Instead of having over 120 items in the prefetch folder, I now have only 12.

    Hi

For Windows Vista and an OEM PC 40 secs to boot is pretty good and as has been mentioned do check your startup items as they will be the limiting factor to getting quicker.

Many startups are not needed at all and if you need help with working out what you need or not then attach the log form the below guide and we can advise.
