Is there some sort of a virus that will turn your computer on automatically after you shut it down? As far as I know I do not have the computer setup this way. After shutting it down it just turns itself back on. I don't know how or why it is doing this? I have looked in my Bios and don't see where I have it turned on to do this. I have run Virus Scans I use AVG, I have run Ad-aware and Spybot Search and Destroy and it turns up nothing. If it is a virus where can I look for it and what may it be? If it isn't a virus should I be looking at spectral causes? LoL!

Off the top of my head, I am not aware of anything, its the other way around, shuts you down minutes after starting. I would download Mcafee Avert Stinger, one of quite a few free tools that lets you check for popular trojans. Be sure your AVG is up to date, there were some connection problems for a while and you may not be current. Let us know!

First thing i would check is your Wake on.......settings in the bios you can usually find these in your power management features
look for sub heading set wake up events or similar

Edit actually just reading this again does it actually shut down or just reboot during the process

    What GLS said.

Software cannot power your computer back up from an off state.

does it do it if you pick up the phone... or are you connected to a LAN, or do you have a mic plugged into the machine? If so, then its probably a wake-on setting like GLS said.

    Hi Adryn
Was just wondering if hes using XP as ive seen this before where it reboots when shutting down, this was caused by a system crash and the automatically restart option is checked

    Possible?

Guess ill wait and see what lone wolfs response is

EDIT Forget all that ive just re-read the title of the thread and it says after 5 minutes

FFS i gotta give up smoking, and ill stick by my original suggestion ;)

I will play dummy here, so work with me. He is saying his PC is turning on automatically when it is shut down. I thought wake on LAN was if the computer was in sleep or hibernate mode, I was unaware it could power up a turned off machine. I guess I am confused as to when this happens, ie, wouldnt you shut power off as soon as it turns off. Fill me in!

Some computers have a wake opn ring sort of function too, like Goldy was mentioning.

The only thing I don't understand about WOL is how you can have your NIC hold an IP when your computer is off, or even hibernating, which is also a power off state.

It really depends on the motherboard... if the power settings are to turn the machine on from completley off (but with AC plugged in) when waking it, or with keyboard on wake that will usually extend to the WakeOn function that the board may have. For example, at my school there is a lab with a whole load of computers, which are connected to a dediaced hub. When the master computer broadcasts to that hub, it turns the machines on. Since they dont have rocker switches to turn them on, its possible to simulate pressing the button using the BIOS chip which runs on the battery on the motherboard.

Yeah a friends computer kept restarting itself every time the phone would ring, this was with a 56k modem

Turning off the aforementioned Wake on ring setting stopped this happening, other option would be to turn the power off at the wall :p

I guess I am assuming people use power supplies to protect themselves from surges. Start, shutdown, one switch to power everything off.

Re-checked my Bios and nothing is enabled that would wake the computer that I can see. It is most definately shutting down... I am clicking shut off from the start menu and it physically shuts down.

I am going to be responding to each individual reply because to much in there for me to remember and answer... LoL!

Nope doesn't happen when you pick up the phone or the phone rings. Not connected to a LAN and no mic plugged in. I may in teh future put a mic in though... several games I am playing they are starting to turn to mic chat (guilds that I am in that is)

No phone ringing when the computer starts itself even though I am on a 56K modem. I could turn the power off at the wall, but I am in a old farmhouse and there is only 2 outlets for electric in the livingroom where the computer is. I could just turn the whole surge protector off, but I have things plugged into it that require it to be on all the time.

I am going off line for a little bit... we have a huge T-Boomer coming and I am shutting down the computer. Will check for replies when I get back on.

Ok well as Adryn stated earlier software can not perform this type of action

So i still think its in the bios, what is the make/model of your motherboard
How do you connect to the internet....

    try this
Start>programs>accessories>systems tool>system info>components>problem devices and see what shows up. I've got a bad ethernet card (it shows here), and my understanding is if you don't switch off at the back of the box (power supply) that the ethernet cards and phone adapters stay powered to receive and restart the box for for faxes, answering machine etc. (providing you choose the option)

I don't know where the options are to turn off those features, but if the card goes bad it could give a problem as described.

Could it be a dialer trojan doing this? Does anyone know if something in the hkey can do this kindof thing?
