Ok so I was just installing the World of warcraft expansion and my computer shut down. its been doing this on and off every once in a while over the last few months. Anyway, I tried to restart and the system came on and got bast the bios screen and then shut down. Now when i turn it on, everything comes on, but the screen displays nothing and hibernates, and I cant get the CD drive to open. I tried to pull the battery from the motherboard and waited for bios to reset, and nothing. Any suggestions? I thought it might be the vid card but then why wont the CD drive pop? Its a 2 drive setup, I tried to run it off one or the other, nothing. what could be wrong?

2 HD, one Maxtor one Segate
    AMD 64 Processor
    Water cooled
    Chaintech Videocard

Sorry I cant post more about the system. what could it be?

If neither Cd Drive worked the 1st thing I would do is swap out the power supply

Would that cause it to run fine for months and suddenly reboot or BSOD and die out? everything turns on fine. its just the CD drive wont open and the monitor just hibernates and acts like its on but not connected but it is. fans all run, etc.

ok so I checked and it appears that my waterpump failed and my processor must have overheated and bucked the kickit. I took it out and booted the system, same response as when it was in. When i hookup the hard drives without the processor nothing happens, the machine flickers for a second and then right back off. think that the process or overheated and died? I have not seen any burn marks or anything...

If you ran the system w/o any heat sink at all, you have probably permanently damaged your CPU. It only takes 5sec or so for an uncooled CPU to reach critical temps...... :(
A few years back, a friend was screwing around with his hardware and just wanted to change some BIOS settings. He had removed the heat sink for whatever reason .I think he was trying different CPU's and got lazy and didn't think it was necessary to put the heat sink on if the PC was only going to be on for 30sec or so to check BIOS readings on the various CPU's he was trying. Well, the first CPU he ran w/o the heat sink burned up in less than 10sec. It was a Duron 800mhz..... he thought the CPU was already bad, and proceeded to burn up an Athlon 1.3 right after that.... tough lesson....

If your water pump failed, and then you tried to run w/o any cooling, your CPU is probably toast.... sorry....

OPk so i did some testing today at my local comp usa. New power supply, no change, nes vid card, no change. I am to believe that its my motherboard at this point because the keyboard is getting no response at all, the lights on the caps lock etc, wont light up. The waterpump was in fact pumping. I probably toasted my PCU as well. I will just have to get a new motherboard and pcu and go from there. time for a rebuild anyway...
