hello guys, a friend of mine referred me to this forum and everyone here seems to have alot knowledge on computers. Well enough boot licking, got something i cant seem to tackle. I cant even get my comp to turn on, no power in the back light. im thinking power supply, but could there be any other causes of this. if so what would they be? thanks in advance!

What do you mean by backlight?

Also, it could be a PSU (PowerSupplyUnit). Is this a new computer? Has this computer ever started? When was the last time it was started?

Any power outages? Is there a modem installed, if so remove it and try again.

The following is not recommended, but has worked on rare occasion.

Have you tried removing the 20 pin power cable to the motherboard then, re-inserting it, while the power cord was plugged in the PSU, and it being turned on? I have seen this revive a computer b4.

Is this Intel based computer, or AMD 754/939/940 socket chip? If so, is the 4 Pin (p4) connector also plugged in?

BTW. :) Welcome to MajorGeeks! I'm sure one of use can help you with your situation!

    Edit:

Also, what was the EXACT last thing done to this computer, before this issue started?

its a compaq presario SR1475CL. its a relatively new computer, about 6 months old. computer was working admirably until last sat sometime during the night it must have turned itself off. there could have been a surge not sure about that. its a AMD based computer. I have not tried the modem as of yet, tried the reinsertion of the 20 pin, nothing happened. The last i did to it was put more ram into it. hope that answers all the unknowns:)

If you are comforatble opening the tower and playing around with cables, Then Major has a valid point, remove the modem and try switching on.

If it still does not work, then remove all connections that go from the power supply to other parts in the comp, connect the power chord at the back of the Tower, and chk if the psu fan is spinning, if not, then it could be your power chord or psu, try a diff power chord ( Monitor ) and then chk, if still the fan is not spinning ( Time for a new PSU )

But if the fan is spinning, then we many need to deep dive,

If the system is under waranty, better contact the vendor or compaq...!

before you buy a new powersupply try a different outlet...sounds stupid but try a different wall outlet first...no power strip...

surely its still under warranty!!! Dont touch nothing and take it back to the place of puchase! DO NOTHING! DO NOT VOID YOUR WARRANTY! If the sys is dodgy it is up to them, and you should imply this, to sort it!

That is appalling, I bought my sys in 08/05 with 1 year on sys but 3 yrs on parts i.e. CPU, GPU, etc. I dont know how much this sys cost you but I certainly wouldn't go back!!!! We bought $2g of white goods 3 yr ago and we have had the tech's out twice for (all) the fridge, washer, kettle, etc. These greedy f..ks design prods to have a short life so the can enforce consumerism. As a point of interest I rang a electric toothbrush comp recently, prod 2 y.o., and questioned them about prod integrity, market profile and respect of their consumers. I got full refunds even though there was no warranty.

It is not what you say but how you say it!!!!!!.

No warranty after 6 months that should be illegal, at least ques them on integral gorunds!
