Computer woes..

    A friend of mine has a Dell, I think that is just out of warranty... she is a single mom and the other day we were talking... she said that she can no longer turn on her computer... when she does she gets a black screen... I think she said... I am under the asumption that its full of viruses... but can this be something we can fix or does she need to now find someone who she will have to pay...She works three jobs now just to make ends meet... any ideas?

    To properly diagnose what problems she has we would need to know alot of info like... does she get any flicker from the screen or is it just black... is power getting to the screen ( power light lit ) can she try another monitor on the PC ( borrow one possibly ) is the monitor connector connected fully and securely?

    things like this help... it at first glance sounds hardware related.... monitor or graphics card!


    are their any close friends or work collegues that are PC tech minded that can have a look at it for her?

    It might be the monitor. If she has an old one lying around, try hooking that up - it's not hard, just see which wires go where and switch them. If that doesn't work, she can always reinstall the operating system. Usually it's not hard to find a friend who can help with that.

    Additional things to look for:

    - when you turn on the power can you here the hard disk spinning up
    - are there any lights at all on the main computer coming on (like the power button etc)
    - does the computer fan run

    If no you answer no to all of these, the power supply or a fuse is bad.
