computer won't boot

Hi I'm running windows xp I have a hp a450 n P4 Ht 3 ghz 160 g hd
My computer will not boot . I cut it on and the windows xp icon come up like it is going to boot but the line just goes on and on never making it past the xp screen. I can boot in safe mode. which let me do a system restore which was useless it still will not boot. My last option is trying to use the system disk but I really don't want to take my computer back to factory shipped condition. Any ideas before I restore my computer to Fac. spec.

Have you previously edited the BIOS in any way? You could try to reset the BIOS and see if that works...be sure to back up all your data before returning your computer to factory specs.

the last this i did was install sp3 I'm in the process of uninstalling that now while in safe mode Hopefully that will solve the problem. I'll check back after the uninstall

 

If the computer will boot in safe mode but not in regular mode, this indicates that some peripheral or software program is not loading.
There is a very good, easy to understand, step by step guide to diagnosing what is causing the problem.

thanks i'm going to down load the item listed in the article, however I think the problem is solved for now. I uninstalled sp3 and now the computer boots fine. I'm not sure where the conflict is but now that I know where the problem is (sp3) I will try a few test to see whats booting that conflicts with the windows upgrade.
