Howdy folks:wave... At ease men:major ... I just had an problem with a new chiefmax 650W PS crapping out on me. Got hot in the P4 plug it was real hard getting the PS plug out because the plastic melted. Took me a couple of hours to clear the plug so I could plug in another PS. Scorch mark on one of the P4 pins on my mobo. Bought another PS ... not chiefmax ... and everything worked fine including shutdown and still works fine until I moved it to it's permanent spot, after that when I try to shut down the computer. WinXP closes normally, but instead of shutting down the power when the screen goes black ... it reboots! The only way I can get it to stop is pull the plug ... once the juice is out of the motherboard I can plug it back in and it will not turn back on until I start it up. So any ideas why it will not power down? I have a 600W Inland P/S. My sig has my system info.:confused

Wow. The power supply really should not have any effect here when working correctly so I go right for a driver issue ASSUMING the motherboard did not take any sort of damage. Other things to consider would be to reset the CMOS and\or look for an update to your BIOS.

:waveWell sir ... reset the cmos and check for the lastest version for the bios ... it's up to date. So still no luck in figuring out why the computer won't shut down.:confused I have been killing the power once the screen goes black. I can also kill the power by holding the power button in.

    Any ideas, please post.:cry

Dual boot XP and 7? Do you have the refusal to shut down in both OSes? What happens in safe mode?

:wave Hummm never thought of that.:-D I haven't used win7 in a while there was some kind of driver issue, I guess with the video card.:confused Haven't done anything to correct that.rolleyes Anyway I will give that a try and get back to you on what happen. :)

Then I'd lean toward a hardware problem rather than a software one. The video drivers do not load in safe mode so you can rule out the video card driver.
Good luck trying to figure out what hardware prevents the computer from shutting down.

In the meantime, here is a possible workaround for the XP side. http://www.karenware.com/powertools/ptstopper.asp
Download and install this (her tools are very small but very efficient). Put the shortcut on the desktop and when you want to power off completely, click the shortcut.

:wave Well sir ... I tried the link you provided and downloaded the program ... alas ... the same results ... the computer won't shut down only reboots ...:cry

... and do you want to hear something crazy:hyper ... I replaced the P/S and the mobo ... I still have the same problem ... no shutdown!!:*** ... not only that the bad +3.66v reading that should be +5v with the old hardware is now +3.60 with the new hardware ... almost the same reading as before ... :tas according the HW Monitor:confused

The BIOS doesn't have the +5 listed but the other voltage listed are within range.

I just don't get it rolleyes:banghead do any of you?

:wave Question ... is there anything other than the mobo or P/S that will cause this problem?:confused:cry

If you go into BIOS, is ACPI enabled. Also, open device manager and look under system devices, are there any yellow exclamation marks next to ACPI? You also may want to look at Event Viewer for any issues.

I know this is happening for both OS's but here is a good troubleshooting page for shutdown issues with XP. It may help tracking down your problem.

:wave Thanks for the link ... it looks very helpful ... I just wanted to add that I thought my camera was malfunctioning because it would not download pictures to the PC in both OS ... instead of downloading them the program would just ask me to wait and would never do anything ... this was in win 7 ... in XP everything would freeze and I would have to force the computer to reboot. The same with 7 ... I decided to try and download the pictures on my other computer and it did so with no problems using XP.

Something is definitely going on, but I don't know what? Hopefully the link will help. Driver issue? Hardware issue? I tested the hard drive with the western digital test program it passed after an extensive test.:confused
