    Hi,

I just purchased the Memorex Optidisc Cleaner and when I put it in my computer, the computer does not even read it. I have tried opening it in other ways to no avail.

Has this happened to anyone else? Any ideas on how I can solve it?

    Thanks.

Are you sure that it's supposed to read it? Some lens cleaners only have to be put in the drive, and they do the cleaning as the drive spins up and tries to read it.... for more info, visit the manufacturer's web site or read the instructions if any were included....

    Hi dlb,

    Thanks for the quick reply.

Yes. I do believe that it has to read it because we have run the same cleaning procedures on 2 DVD players and 2 CD players that are not connected to the computer and in all instances, it gives voice commands and performs other checks.

When I watch a movie on the DVD player in my computer, it often inches along as if it was having difficulty and sometimes skips to the next track. The same movie will not do that on the other DVD players.

I did look online for instructions and clarification on other websites including Memorex's before posting on MJ. Either I missed something in my search or this problem is unique to me.

I would rather not buy another DVD cleaner. The economy where I live is very bad, and I have definitely been affected by it (i.e. I'm broke right now.)

    Thanks.

Hmmmm.... does it say the cleaner is PC compatible? I know, it shouldn't really matter, but maybe it does. Did you happen to keep the receipt? Again, I know, we never think of it until it's too late ;) But if you have it, maybe you can return the cleaning kit; even without the receipt, maybe you can exchange it for another type or a different brand if you explain your situation to a store manager....
Well, good luck! Sorry I can't be of more help...

    Thanks dlb.

I do have the receipt, but I have already used it extensively.

It does not say computers per se, but it does say its for CDs & DVDs. I too thought that it does not matter, but maybe it does. I'll research it again when I have a bit of time, and maybe I'll have to bite the bullet and buy another. We will see.

Allow me another question. I have like a gazillion children (only 4 actually) but I noticed that there are fingerprints on the metal part of the CD player. They are not 3 dimensional prints such as would be caused by stuck on food, but they are there. Should I worry about it? And should I clean them? If so, how?

    Thanks again.

Metal parts? I have 2 CD/DVD drives in my PC and there are no metal parts that are user acessible or even visible. If this is a laptop drive, then it makes sense. The fingerprints shouldn't affect performance or the reading of discs unless they are directly on the lens which is really small. But to be safe, use a lint free cloth and rubbing alcohol or a special contact cleaner for electronics (but you probably don't have contact cleaner just laying around, it isn't cheap, and it isn't mandatory). Just get the cloth damp (not wet) with the alcohol, and gently wipe the prints away. Don't use to much pressure; you shouldn't have to....

dlb, you are awesome! :cool I will do just what you said.

You are correct. The CD drive is for my laptop, and I guess it got fingerprints when it was opened.

Well, thanks again! My 10 yr old wanted me to add a smiley that moves so :drool (her choice).

I tried all the suggestions and finally came up with a solution that worked for me. In 'control panel' under 'properties' for your drive, set up your drive to 'autoplay' audio files, to open with explorer and start the file. Also to be safe I set up 'mixed content' files to be opened the same way. Drive opened the files thru explorer for viewing, and a double click opened the file thru media player. Worked like a champ!

One caution on CD/DVD drive cleaners. Read the package and instructions carefully. Some have a warning about not using the cleaner in "half-height" drives (the thin ones found in notebooks, mini-desktops, Xboxes, etc). If you ignore the warning you risk damaging the drive.
