The comp's been working fine for months untill yesterday , All of a sudden it wont recognize the mouse or keyboard ( be it USB or PS/2) . The monitor is working all fine . I have a HP compaq dc 7700 , Win XP SP3 . The mouse lights but no cursor movement . The keyboard lights at boot but doesnt work . The PC wont take " ANY INPUT " from mouse or keyboard .Things I've tried :

    - Replaced several mouse and keyboards both USB and PS/2 with no success
    - The same mouse and keyboards work on other PC

I've read many pages but no solution

try going to device manager (control panel-hardware and sound-device manager) the click on key boards and check the device is activated, if it is click on the driver tab and click on the update driver tab, do the same with the m

The computer wont take " ANY INPUT" from the keyboard or mouse . The mouse and keyboard work fine on other comp's . All the ports also seem to be working fine , as the keyboard lights on boot but then after no lights from it . Although the mouse lights but there is no cursor response .

So the computer fully boots otherwise? No errors?

If me, I would power down and unplug the computer from the wall. That will remove the ATX Form Factor required +5Vsb standby voltage normallly applied across several points and ports (including USB) when the computer is simply turned off, but not unplugged. Then plug your mouse and keyboard into a totally different pair of USB ports, cross fingers and fire the machine up. If no good, then your motherboard may be toast. I would swap in a spare PSU just to make sure you have good power before replacing anything else.

Yes the Booting is fine but i cant get in to the desk as i need to enter the username and password BUT the comp wont take any input ,
Similarly cant enter Safe mode or BIOS either ....

Well, it seems your options are limited - a new KVM switch (with no guarantee it will work), or virtual KVMs, which require the computers be networked and are typically not as fast as physical connections.

Do any other USB devices work? Like a USB memory stick? I know you have no access but it should flash a light on the stick if it is accessed.

This sounds like it might be a BIOS fault then.

Do you have a KVM switch as Digerati is suggesting? I am assuming not.

Sorry, but at this point it sounds like your motherboard is dead.

Ummm, I think I goofed. My comments about a KVM switch was supposed to go in another thread. Sorry if that caused any confusion and please disregard that.

Ok, the keyboard doesn't work during boot - you cannot enter BIOS?
I have had Win 7 act like this, but I could use the KB in BIOS at least.
Try remote desktop into that system??

What was the last thing you did before this started?

Unless remote access was previously setup, I don't see how he can now. I think it is new computer time.

I did not set up remote desktop earlier, therefore cant access this way,
The last thing I remember was switching my antivirus .

It wasn't from Norton, was it? I ask because your comment reminded me of another user with two machines that lost function after removing, or trying to remove Norton when it expired.

I switched from symantec endpoint protection made by the same company as Norton ( Symantec) .

Well, I don't know if that means anything or not. I am just hearing several reports of Symantec/Norton users with broken computers after attempting to uninstall one of the their products. Note this was a BIG problem with NAV and NSW (Systemworks) years ago - so it would not be good for them if this is becoming a big problem again.

I might suggest you see if anything here helps. Note so far, the only solutions I have seen have been to reinstall the original Norton product, then uninstall it again, reboot to ensure settings have taken, then install the new program. The other solution was a fresh OS install. :(
