Computer Won't Recognize Three of Six Slots of RAM

I'm sorry if this original question as posed doesn't provide enough information. Let me know what is needed and I'll provide promptly.

Anyhow, I noticed my computer is not recognizing all my RAM. It used to show all of the RAM I have when I clicked Control Panel --> System, but now only shows 9 GB (I have 15 I believe). 3 of the 6 slots are being recognized. I have Windows Vista 64-bit and I don't understand why it would have recognized all before and now only half.

    Any ideas?

    Oooookay. Here we go:

If you look in System Information, how much does it read there?

How much does it report in your BIOS?

Does the amount change if you take out three modules?

If it does, how much do those three show up as if you put them in and remove the other three?

If the modules are not showing up correctly you need to start narrowing things down. Test them one by one in slot 1, with the other slots empty, and verify the amount in BIOS or Control Pane (preferably both).

Report back with lots of numbers, and we'll go from there. :)

I will be messing with the slots of RAM in a bit.

So far, I can tell you that both System Information and BIOS report 9 GB of RAM. Should be 12, IIRC (3 1GB sticks that came with the CPU and 3 3GB sticks that I bought seperately).

I'll report my later findings ASAP. Thank you so much for the response, I didn't feel comfortable dealing with all of this without some guidance before I delve into it.

I'm not aware of any company that makes 3GB modules. The available sizes are 1GB, 2GB, 4GB and in some cases 8GB. Double-check that it's not 2GB modules. If it is, you have 3x2GB and 3x 1GB, which adds up to 9GB, and that in turn means it's showing correctly.

    Hi

Just to add and more a check of what you have could you produce an Everest custom log following the below and attach as listed.

@Mimsy, I too not come across 3GB single memory modules, and if they are 3GB then each slot in that motherboard used in the Gateway can only according to Crucial hold 2GB max per slot.

Then I think it was 3 4GB modules along with the 3 1GB. I remember for sure I had more than 10 GB.

I'll use that program in a bit and post the log. Thanks again.

Just to note, whatever my RAM configuration was, the computer did recognize it at one point. I think the specification link I posted above mentioned that the RAM for this system is expandable to 16 GB.

I've also attached the Everest Log generated according to the above directions.

    Hi

Sorry, could you try the log again but with this free app called Speccy HERE as yours didnt come out like mine did when I went over the bits that would be needed, although I was using the Elerest Ultimate version I paid for, so may give more info, as sure the Free Everest version did but may not like Vista x64.

What I need is the actual ram module listings, so run Speccy and click File > Save as XML, then attach as per the earlier instructions but as the forum may not like XML docs, please pop the XML in a zip file to attach (right click the XML and choose Sent To and choose Compressed Zip Folder)

Max ram according to the support tech specs is 12GB HERE

    Code:
     [B]RAM[/B]">
         <data title="">9.0GB Triple-Channel DDR3 @ 533MHz 7-7-7-20</data>
You will need to do as Mimsy say's and try each module one at a time.

What exactly does that report tell you? Does it suggest anything is wrong?

No, it is just saying you have 9 gigs of RAM.

    Hi

It also delving deeper, lists your ram modules as:

    Slots
    1. Samsung PC3-8500F (533 MHz) 1GB
    2. Kingston PC3-8500F (533 MHz) 2GB
    3. Samsung PC3-8500F (533 MHz) 1GB
    4. Kingston PC3-8500F (533 MHz) 2GB
    5. Samsung PC3-8500F (533 MHz) 1GB
    6. Kingston PC3-8500F (533 MHz) 2GB

So can only summise as it does list the serial model numbers of the ram modules is that you have the correct amount of ram in 9GB, but really would test each ram module one at a time and see if Windows reports a different figure, also just test the Samsung and the Kingston ones on their own so 3 x Samsung then 3 x Kingston, But I did check the product/serial numbers against the searches for ram and the Kingston ones come up as 2GB and the Samsung as 1GB

Trying now to check if Gateway have ever released a BIOS update to take into concideration ram, not found the changelogs as yet, but nothing new for OEMs not to list this info easily, Wouldnt suggest flashing the bios, especially if the lastest update doesnt cover any issues with Ram reporting, but judging from the listings on the product codes, they are reporting I'm afraid 9GB in total.

lol, well looks like maybe I'm just an idiot and forgot how much RAM I had in my computer. Given what it's saying and seeing in the log what each port is reporting, I'd think that has to be right. Especially with the serial number verification you performed, Halo.

There isn't any performance issues or anything with my computer that made me think this, I just thought I had more than 10 GB for some reason, but I guess not.

Sorry if I wasted your time, but on the other hand, this really helped me out and gave me peace of mind rather than thinking something is wrong with my computer. Thank you all for your assistance! This was my first time posting here and it's great to know there is a website like this one can come and get expert analysis on what issues we encounter. Very much appreciated.

If you ever need more than 10GB, you can get up to 12GB in that system. The motherboard limits you from going higher than that unfortunately.

Glad you got things figured out. No matter what else, it always helps to know what you're dealing with. :)

    Hi

You have not wasted anyones time at all and, its always good to get to the bottom of an issue, if you thought you had more than 10GB ram then thats resonable and I forget at times what I installed, actually installed extra ram in wrong PC and took a week to figure it out!!!

Your thread actually was a help as it has shown me that I need to when troubleshooting ram issues, is that unless a user has a retail version of Everest, then the trial or old free versions are not going to help, whereas Speccy a new app is good for this, doesnt have a get logging capability and custom options but it worked, so I have learned something new.

Glad you like the forum and never be afraid to ask any questions, you may think they are daft ones, but daft question is the one not asked.
