I have a friends computer that I am trying to fix, but the computer will not start in any mode(safe, last known good configuration ie.). It keeps getting this stop error:

    stop: 0x000000c5(0xe1b86000,0x000000ff,0x00000001,0x805514d5)

If you press F8 during startup and go into safe mode all the numbers change except the ones highlighted in red above.

If you start in last known good configuration same thing again, all numbers change except the ones highlighted in red above.

I do not know where to go from here, MajorGeeks.com helped me out so well on my last issue with my computer, I know that you can give me some useful information on this one.

    Thanks

    Mark

it is windows xp and no I have no start up disc for his dell computer. Now I do have an installation disc for my gateway computer, but I am not sure if this will work.

I have tried my disc in his computer, and I have 3 choices

    1. Reinstall Windows XP
    2. Repair Windows XP
    3. Exit and load from hard drive

I do not know if I can reinstall with my disc, I have tried repair and it takes me to the C:\windows prompt. I am lost after that.

If I can reinstall Windows XP with my disc and use his key code will he lose all of his files?

AustrAlien, I did see that but the first is for windows 2000, not XP, and the second link lands you here http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=319810&sd=RMVP
which was corrected by earlier service packs.
I don't think either applies to steeltek's problem. I could be wrong; it wouldn't be the first time. :-D

I could not find anything for XP that seemed to remotely help or offer a suggestion.

Ok, I have tried all that, nothing seems to work. I did however get it to boot into safe mode, but when it had safe on all for corners of the screen, a message box popped up saying that it could not start up in safe mode and restarts and goes to the blue screen of death.

I tried the restore, I tried repair, I am at a total loss at what to do.

I finally stumbled across a thread where the person removed the drive, hooked it up to another computer and scanned the drive. It turns out it had malware on it. When it was clean, he put it back in the original computer and then it worked.

Another thing to attempt: remove a stick of memory and see if it works problem free. If not, switch sticks. If there are more than 2 sticks in, remove all but one (unless they must be in matched pairs). Granted the computer will run a lot slower but if there is a bad stick, you will find it.

The first thing that you should do is to check that your hard drive is not failing.
Download the diagnostic utility from the hard drive manufacturer's website to create a bootable floppy or CD. Boot with it, and run the short/quick test and then the long/extended test. If the test shows no problem with the hard drive, then it is safe to proceed with more work to rectify the problem with the Windows system.

ok, I tried all that, and nothing worked, I did however try to reinstall on his dell desktop with my factory gateway windows disk. That did work somewhat.

I started to work, had some viruses, removed them with malwarebytes, and after restarting , got this message:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters.

Check with your hardware vendor for any bios updates. Disable bios memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F
8 to select advanced startup options, and then select safe mode.

    Technical information:

    *** STOP: 0x0000007E (0xc0000005, 0x833406aa, oxa95dd880, 0xa95dd580)

    Beginning dump of physical memory
dumping physical memory to disk: (counts up to 100 and restarts)

I can start up in safe mode, checked the hard drive, and it has over 50% free.

Don't know how to update bios.

I can run logs and burn them to cd and then upload them to the forums through, my computer, but I can only run the logs in safe mode as that is the only mode that it will boot up in.

    If you start here http://aumha.org/a/stop.htm
and scroll down the middle pane, you'll see quite a few stop 7E errors.
There are 8 that apply to XP but none seem to fit your situation.

    8. after you install Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005, your computer restarts continuously

At this point, I think you should see if you can purchase a recovery disk from Dell. This will put the computer back to factory specs. Your friend will lose everything he has installed but he will have a working computer which he lacks now.

We have explored that option, and Dell wants 239.00 dollars, way more than the computer is worth as it was bought in 2004.

I there any other options availeable? What about him buying a windows xp os with sp3, his has sp1, but I do not know nothing about dell.

Is there another place to get a recovery disk other than Dell?

    Thanks for all your help

Have you tried taking the hard drive out of the Dell and connecting it to your working PC as a slave drive. If the drive is still booting up in Safe Mode you should be able to copy your friends data. Make sure to scan the data as there may be malware.

Once you have recovered his data you can then buy the OEM version of Windows from a store and re-install Windows. You will need to visit the Dell support site and download the drivers. This is easily done by entering the Service Tag on the Dell website to locate the appropriate drivers for his model. Good luck!

There is a site in the UK that sells recovery disks. What is the model of Dell?

I'm sure it is less than $239 (highway robbery price!) and probably less than the price of an XP OEM disk.

  16. Here's a link to Dell backup disks.

They will ship you a FULL set of disks (OS- Drivers-Programs) that came with/installed on your computer. Did you try unplugging the computer removing ALL memory-HD-Vid and sound cards. and plugging it back in-turn it on (I kow it won't work). then Turn it off. Unplug it again. PRESS AND HOLD THE POWER BUTTON 30 SECONDS. then put everything back together, plug it in and it MAY start up.It and old trick that worked for me a bunch of times.
And to let everyone know. The COA tag on ANY dell machine is useless. it won't work with any OS disk you try to use. EVEN the computer your trying to reinstall it on!

I contacted dell by email and was able to receive his factory discs(1 set) as he has never requested them. The 239 dollars I found out was their fee to fix it as his warranty was expired.

I was going to put a 20gig hard drive on, install his os with the discs he will be receiving, and remove the files he wants off of his old hard drive that I will put on as a slave. Then format that hard drive.

Is this a good idea or is there a better one. I was able to run malwarebytes on it before I got the blue screen of death again. Found 21 infected files.

That sounds like a good plan to me.

After you get his files, make sure you do the full format (not quick) on the infected drive before installing the OS.

    Good Luck! :)

  19. Look on Majorgeeks for a HD formating program. I'd put up a link but I'm on my phone and It OCSTS TO MUCH to go and look it up right now.Unless you do the F11 or F12 option (factory reset-WIPES OUT EVERYTHING and puts it back to factory new)

any factory reset or a format will wipe out everything, no need to use a different program, windows' setup will take care of that.
