Hi...I hate to be the new guy who immediately starts asking for help, but I have no real alternative. After shutting it down on Sat night, my computer just refuses to start now. The board doesn't run any post that I can see, the monitor is just black. The fans and everything spin as if it's turning on, but I hear no beeps, it's almost as if it's hibernating. When I try to turn it on, the two Optical Drives flash rapidly as if they are doing SOMETHING...but stop and the fans all slow to a lower speed and stay there. Other posts around the net I found reccomended reseating memory, Hard Drives and the like, after trying that for two days...I still got nothing. Any ideas?

I'm running my Nintendo Wii browser right now...help please....

hmmm sounds like the Power supply... I have an idea tho, Look on the back of the computer, there should be a red slider thing underneath the power cord. Use a pen or something like that (while the computer is off) and slide it all the way down. Turn on the computer (nothing will show, it is a good thing) Leave it on for a 10 seconds and shut it off. Move the slider back to the original position and turn it back on. This apparently resets the motherboard or something, this has worked for me several times before.

After that ... I should of suggested first making sure the power cable and VGA/DVI cable are connected securely to the monitor and PC.

DO NOT do this! This switch changes the power supply intake voltage set. If you change it it might blow the power supply and anything connected to it.

No, it doesn't ???? I have done this multiple times.

Sorry if it is, but personal experience (I have done this with my home computer multiple times too) It has never done anything but fix problems.

But maybe i am wrong... sorry.

Sorry For putting your computer at risk!! I hope you didn't end up destroying something... Really Really sorry if you do blow out smt i take the blame and will be in debt to you anyway possible.

If you change the voltage switch from 220V to 110V in a 220V country it will blow. If you change the switch from 110V to 220V in a 110V country then the unit will probably not start but damage might be caused, I guess it depends on luck in 110V to 220V.

O ya that's right. Didn't think about that.

I tell you tho I have done that to at least 20 Computers again and again, no damage. I guess I was lucky then... of course i just assumed that it would be good advice. I guess I shouldn't do that, but whats better than personal experience? I guess the difference here was the voltage in different countries, sorry i didn't realize that.

Hopefully he gets that message before he tries it... plus we don't know where he lives...

That's why I was being cautious. Anyway, the act of changing the switch position likely has the effect of draining the voltage circuits of the PSU, therefore this can be accomplished in much the same way by unplugging the power cord with the computer turned off and then pressing the power button.

Then why has that fixed computer problems like his for me in the past? Like exactly like his.

Sry for double post but i want to make sure you realized I posted again, i dont know if i edit it if you will see i did that.

Will this work... this is really what i should of recommended. Maybe something happened with the bios, since there is nothing showing up on the screen (no post, not nothing).

I was not suggesting that this would not work, I was merely suggesting that it might only apply to people in 110V countries.

Well, I meant, Do you know why it works? I know it works, like I said it has worked for so many times before.

Just resets the voltages resetting everything or what?

That's what I would think so.:)

Well I didn't try it...so no worries. It sounded a bit odd when I read it so I googled it and learned of the voltage switch. But I've convened with some other people at the computer store I work at (I'm in the warehouse...I only need to know enough to put it together....not to fix it) and one person says that the power supply may be the issue and she's gonna give me a PSU tester of her's so I don't gotta buy one. Though another guy...who is miles smarter then me, says he's 95% sure my mobo has bitten it. (It's only 4 years old...) But I'm gonna test the PSU first, and if nothing occurs after that, I may be going shopping.

Unless anyone else has any ideas?

Good, I was getting nervous... I was about ready to pay for it too because i was going to feel really aweful. Glad you researched it, I am really sorry for that!!

4 years is a long time in the world of a computer. Major components like that only have an average lifespan of 5 years.

If you think about it, if the PC is turned on every day and used for 2 hours (as an average) then in 4 years it will have run for 2920 hours. Plus the wear & tear associated with startup and shutdown (it places extra load on the PSU) plus dust and upgrades equals a lot of wear.

I am not sure what you mean by "tray". I can't find that in the article you linked.

    Sorry, it was my fault.
Must be "trial", meaning act or an instance of trying or proving, test or experiment.
