Started up computer earlier on and Windows XP log in box came up. Have NEVER been asked for this before so restarted. It then went straight into CHKDSK mode which took 40 mins to go through, after which it restarted but asked me if I want to Start in safe mode, safe mode with networking plus a couple of others including last known settings that worked. It counts down for 25 secs for me to make my choice by using up/down arrows.

Only thing is arrow keys don't do a thing so I cannot choose and computer counts down it's 25 secs then sits with a blank screen!!

What can I do? I know I need a new computer but that's not practical right now.

    Cheers for any help.

    Hi,

If you are using a USB keyboard try an older PS/2 keyboard and see if the arrow keys respond.

    Hi and thanks for replying.

You were right. Swapped for older keyboard and can scroll using arrows now. However, computer still won't boot up :(

Have selected safe mode - doesn't load.

Have selected safe mode with networking - doesn't load.

Safe mode with command prompt - no joy.

Start using last known configuration that worked properly - same old.

Start Windows normally - same as before.

Two of the options instigate a load of file names whizzing up the screen before coming to a halt. The others just lead to blank (black) screen.

Why did CHKDSK kick in, and since it has done, what has it done to my computer??!!

    Hi

Thanks for your reply and your help.
I don't think I am making myself clear in this matter though :( My computer won't load. I have tried starting up with the XP disk in and the result is the same - same list of options and the same outcome each time.

I'm surprised this issue has the major geeks community totally stumped!! I surely can't be the first person this has happened to!!??

    Cheers

Chkdsk started because XP determined that the file system was "dirty". At startup XP will check to see if the "dirty" flag has been set and if it is, it will automatically start chkdsk. What happened when you tried safe mode with command prompt? Just a black screen?

It sounds like you are not booting from the install CD and it is taking you right back to the same screen. Do you have the BIOS set to boot from CD first or hard drive?

One thing you might also want to check is the condition of your hard drive. If you can determine the maker, they usually have a bootable iso you can burn to do a diagnostic on the drive.

I had a laptop the other day doing this, no start in safe or regular. removed and hooked drive up externally, ran malware and virus checks on it, removed infection and good to go...

Cheers for your reply. Unfortunately, I haven't the first clue how to go about doing that so I won't be able to repeat your success!! :-o

The safe mode options all seem to run a list of file names and then come to a stop. The black screen accompanied by a whizzing hard disk noise are the Last Good Configuration & Load Windows Normally options.

I really have no idea. How would I be able to tell?

Thanks for helping, but I don't know what an ISO is :-o

whizzing hard drive noise does not sound good. Can you find out what the make of the drive is?

Cheers for all your help guys, but I'm afraid in way over my head here so I have called in the IT guru who looks after all my wife's school and education authority systems. He should be able to sort it out and thinks the disk may be a bit worse for wear.

    Cheers all.
