i doubt it's a hardware thing because it was just running this morning. i booted the computer, it showed the windows sign, and then went to the repair window where it shows two options repair or start norm. so i chose repair. did this for several hours, rebooted and the same thing happened. so i decided to do a restore. i clicked F8 to get to recovery option which will not show up. i just get a low resolution screen with a window's 7 background with my cursor.

Please help. operation system is window's 7 and is a Dell computer.

    Manoetius...

    Desktop or laptop?
    Dell/model?
    PC age?
    Usage (ex. light/med/heavy)?
    Hard Drive size/free space?
Do you have a copy of the Windows 7 installation disk?
What is the Dell service tag number for that machine?
Anything unusual happen or performed (ex. uninstall a laggy or unreliable program) to/on the machine prior to this episode?

    Mfg date 2011 08 29
    usage is moderate
    desktop Inspiron 570
    Service tag 1BRQ0R1
    plenty of free space
No downloads were preformed previous to the episode.

*update* after about a hour of it being on the low resolution screen it finally gave me the options and i selected restore to factory setting but that never happened after 2 hours so i shut it back down.

I have seen situations like this where updating BIOS or updating your chipset driver will fix the problem. You have to get into Windows first, of course. However, there is an update of your BIOS available if you haven't already updated it...

Other than using some sort of bootable media to get inside and find out what's wrong, I can't think of anything you can do. I'll let someone else with more expertise on bootable fix disks make that recommendation...

Just for reference, here is the Dell link for your drivers:
