Computer won't turn on

My computer won't turn on at all anymore. My monitor is working for sure. I can see everything light up inside my case so I don't think that it's a problem with the motherboard. My HD was making some loud clicking noises so I'm assuming that isn't the problem. How can I check to be definite that it's my HD and not my GPU? I'm running an old 8800GT, but don't think it's dead.

edit: My bios isn't loading either now that I think of it. Before, if I turned it on and off a few times eventually it would boot. Now, it's just a black screen. All the lights are on for it though.

 

It won't let me edit anymore. I've had some developments though. I flipped the switch on my PSU and let the BIOS light on my motherboard go out and then turned the PSU back on. That let me boot my computer again and (thankfully) backup all my data! I had to plug my mouse via USB for it to work though. My keyboard won't work so I'm assuming the peripherals in the back of my motherboard are dead, leading me to believe it's a motherboard issue. I'm assuming this is going to be a pain to replace... so any advice on making sure it's my motherboard / finding a replacement? It's about 3 years old so I'm doubting that they still make it now.

 

Anyone have some input on this? Is there a way to test my parts to see if they are working correctly?

It may possibly be the HDD. However, I could be mistaken.

 

Yea, the keyboard works fine. It's not a USB keyboard so I can't test that. What's weird is that if I flip the switch on my PSU off, wait for the bios light on my motherboard to go out, turn the PSU back on, and start the computer up again I can sometimes get it to turn on. But once it goes back into sleep mode it won't turn on again and I have to repeat the process. When I get it working by doing it this way, the keyboard works again, although one time it (and the mouse) didn't and I had to use the on screen keyboard while having my mouse plugged in via USB.

I thought that it was my harddrive making the noise, but after putting my head closer to my computer I'm pretty sure the motherboard is making the noise. It's a high-pitched whine/click (not sure how to describe) whenever the computer is "thinking".

 

Under your power settings, click "Never" under the "Turn of hard disks" option.

If the disks power down after the PC "goes to sleep", you can't wake it unless you do a hard shutdown, and restart the machine. Usually.

Those clicks, and whines sound like the HDD. Especially if it only makes the sound when the PC is "thinking".

 

To add some closure to this, it was the power supply! As of an hour ago I installed a new one (not very hard) and it turned on fine with no whining noise. Should have listened earlier!
