I upgraded/updated Win8 to Win8.1 and so wanted to change computer name to AntecWin8.1Pro32bit; however that is too many characters. 'W81Pro X32' was rejected and have to settle for 'W81Prox32'. WHY can I not have a capitalised X within the name ? Also, despite not including 'space' in the errorbox's LISTING of forbidden characters, I had to remove the space before the X.

There is no reason why you shouldn't b e able to us capitals in the name. If you want a space the only way around that is to use a dash: I.E. My-Computer
I would also use a more descriptive name. I deal with large amount of machines on a large network & have a specific way of naming. Obviously not as important on a home PC, but I normally use something like Kestrels-PC

There was NO error message - but with 'X', the 'OK" button would greyover; however if I changed it to 'x', the 'OK' button would become enabled.
The actual name I used is not negotiable.
