    Computer Reboots Itself

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi I am having problems with my computer rebooting itself whenever it wants to.
I have sent an event log attachment to show you wassup.

Also I am having problems with my power settings which dont seem to work.

In power settings I have the monitor set to turn off in 10 min.
Turn off hardisks set to never.
System Standby is set to turn off in 30 min.
System Hibernate is set to turn off in 2 hours.

the only thing that works is that the monitor turns off, standby does not work and niether does the hibernate.

When my monitor screen is off because of power settings I come back and move my mouse and I am looking at the sign in screen to startup windows, or it will be on the desktop. It seems to reboot itself after a certain time I guess. need help!!!!

My computer used to go to standby and then turn itself on again all by itself without me moving it. I think it had something to do with my mouse or something because I had these led lights flashing inside all around.

When your computer turns on after a hibernate, it goes into the logon screen, although I don't see how your computer would be able to turn itself back on after a hibernate.

When you say the start up screen, do you mean the "sign in page"? If so windows will go there when it hibernates.

This indicates something is wrong. You need to turn off reboot on error so instead you will get a BSOD and an error # and message. Then we can search for what might be causing the error.
    To turn off reboot:
    1. right click My Computer and select Properties
    2. click on the Advanced tab
    3. Down towards the bottom under Startup and Recovery, click the Settings button
    4. In the system failure section, remove the check/tick from Automatically restart.
    5. Click Okay to close this box,

When you get a BSOD instead of a reboot, post the first number, you do not need to post the three in parentheses and also post any words with the error.

Hey there Plodr I read your intructions when I clicked ok to close the box a warning came up and said this:

Windows cannot send administrative alerts unless Alerter service is running.

To start Alerter now, click the start button, point to programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Computer Management.
In the left pane, double click System Tools, then click Services.
In the right pane, double click Alerter.
    Under Current Status, click start.
To have the Alerter start automatically each time windows starts, under Startup, click Automatic.

I did not do any of those things above and went back into my computer and put those settings back to where they were until I am sure this is what I am supposed to do. Also I dont understand (sorry) what BSOD means when you are asking to post the 1st number am I supposed to reboot after unchecking that automatic startup?

When I went back to put the settings back in My Computer and clicked ok that same message came up for the Alerter.

I will wait for your reply before I do these things this might give you some info on the problem here.

    Thanks Danimal33

BSOD means Blue Screen Of Death When there is an error instead of rebooting and you having to figure out what is wrong, the computer will stop. You will see a blue background with white printing.
    It will say something like
Stop error 0x000000## ( three different strings of numbers in here)
    sometimes with words like
    IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
    KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
    DATA_BUS_ERROR
    PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
    as a few examples.
The ## above can be letters or numbers. The important thing is the last two things in that string.

    A site like this
    http://www.theeldergeek.com/stop_error_messages.htm
helps you to try and determine what is wrong by examining the code.

As far as Alerter service, I go to Black Viper to see what it should be set at.
    http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/Archive/Services/Alerter.htm
    looks like disabled.
You are the first person I've helped who has tried to turn off reboot on error and gotten an Alerter Service announcement.
At this point, I don't know what to tell you to do.

    Re: Comupter Self Reboots

About the BSOD I have never gotten an error message once when the computer shuts down or reboots itself.
I could just be running a program like my antivirus programs and such or just be on the internet and it quietly just restarts itself no error messages at all.
I changed my power scheme today now I have it set as

Power scheme is set to Always On
Monitor to shut off in 15 min. it does that
Hardrives are set to Never turn off.
System Standby is set to Never. I used to have this set to turn off in 25 min but it never went into standby mode.
Hibernate I have set to turn off at 2 hours and today when I got home from work it was shut down , I pushed my button to turn on comp started up as it should and came out of hibernate but then went to my windows sign in password to get to my desktop, did that thinking I would get right on the screen but started up just like normal loading all my things. I thought when you hibernate, that when you came back out of it you would have your desktop loaded and ready to go. Not powering up like a normal restart or Startup.
Now When I click the Start button and go to Turn Off Computer and click Hibernate like when I am sleeping it goes into hibernate. I wake up in the morning and turn on comp it comes out of hibernate and goes right to my desktop like I never signed off or turned off my computer. Everything is loaded except for my wireless connection which it finds right away and thats the Only thing that loads upon returning from hibernation state. No load times on programs.

P.S. Did you happen to check out that zip file I sent after my last post it has my Event logs on what errors are occurring on my startups that might help you help me out. I will send it again. If you look at that you will see the error at around 3pm. I am at work at that time but that also is when my antivirus is scheduled to run.
Well let me know what think this crazy problem might be.

    Thanks again Danimal33

I can't understand my own error messages so no I did not look at yours.

The reason you never got a BSOD on a reboot is because that feature is turned off. Your computer reboots instead of stopping and throwing up a usable error.
A this point, with the Alerter message and you not be able to turn off the reboot on error feature, I can't offer further avice.
