conecting to internet

I have a used dell xps gen4 desk top, running fresh install of xp pro. When i connect to my comcast modem it will not connect to internet. Comcast asked what kind of connector i have i told them 1394 net adapter. They told me that connector is used to connect to or more office cpu,s on a net. I do not have any disks that came with the cpu. Is there any other adapter i could buy to access comcast high speed internet. Do i have to replace 1394 adapter with another kind

 

This chart is a great reference for computer hardware, look around the back your PC for an RJ45 Ethernet port > third column, top row on the chart. This is what you need to connect to your modem. Buy a 'patch' cable, not a crossover and you should be good to go .

 

sorry i do not know what a pach cable is or where to connect it. The cpu dose have a rj45 port that i connected to then called comcast for help, that is when they told me to go into network connections and i told them the only connections that show are (2) 1394 adapters, they told me that was not good and i have to locate the drivers disk (that i dont have)then then they lost me.

 

Ok Casper, assuming you have Windows XP on the XPS, you will need to download the driver from Dell, transfer it to to the XPS and run it to install the Ethernet network drivers.
