Confused about IP addresses.

Hi I am confused over IP addresses as I am concerned about security. I have broadband with a wireless router ? connected. I am not sure but I connect over the radio not with a wire.

When I connect to the internet, what is the IP address that everybody sees. is it the IP address of the motherboard or is it the IP address of the wireless router?

I am confused, I have tried to google this but get confused between static and non static addresses. Which one will I have?

 

Every connection will go through your router, whether you are connected by wires or a 'radio' signal. Your computer will be hidden behind your router's internal firewall and every connection from the internet to your computer will come through that router firewall first.

Your internet service provider will be able to tell you whether you have a static or dynamic (non-static) address.

 

Your router performs a service called NAT (Network Address Translation). Which takes all you local IP packets and remaps them for the Internet. You have a local (internal) IP you can see by running ipconfig from the command line. The world sees your external IP, the IP address your ISP provides to your Router. The router is sometimes called the gateway. It is your local network's gateway to the Internet.
So the router uses NAt to 'map' the external to the intenal IP.

 

Thank you for your replies guys. So when I am online people know me as the IP address that has been issued to me by the service provider and not my motherboard. That is kind of weird because I had to change the motherboard and windows said it was the wrong computer or something like that.

 

That's Windows activation. Your ISP has nothing to do with it.
