Confused About Popup Blockers

First off, as you will soon see, I am a novice at all of this.
I'm confused about all the different pop-up blocker downloads. I was hoping someone could just tell me one to pick. When I read all the info about a particular one, I find some are supported by ads, which kind of defeats the purpose. Doesn't it? Or does that matter at all?
Anyway, this is what I have:

    Dimension 2400 Series
    Intel Pentium 4 Processor @ 2.20 GHz
    512MB DDR SDRAM @ 333MHz

I access the Internet through: CharterPipeline, MSN, AOL (all for Broadband)

I have no problem with popups if I happen to be on AOL, but have numerous problems when using IE 6.0.

I don't know if you need all this info, but here it is anyway. On my IE screen, I have a toolbar that has several search engines. They are Google, MSN, Dogpile, Goclick, MyWebSearch, DMOZ, Mamma, Kanoodle, Searchfeed, Revenue Pilot, & Yahoo.
I don't use most of these, there just, well there.

So can someone feed me a link or tell me where to find a good popup blocker. I don't know enough about all of this to choose, and I am intimidated with adding unfamilar things to my computer. Sorry if I gave to much info.

IMO, this one is the best. Works perfectly for me. Plus it comes with a lot of nice extra features. Google is the best.

    Wow, that was fast!

Thank you so much for your prompt response, I really appreciate it. Going to try it now.

    I use this
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=1244

It's called MyIE2 and it "sits" on top of IE6. It offers quite a bit more features including tabbed browsing ex: you can have more than one site open in the same window. Take a look at the screen shot. This browser HAS pop-up blocking software in it and it does a good job of it.

Additionally, there are other alternative browsers that do this as well.

    Opera

    and

    Mozilla Firebird

    Both are browsers.

The google toolbar mentioned above is by far the best toolbar available. It DOES have popup blocking capability in it, but I haven't used it and don't know how efficient it is.

If you have any more questions, just ask away.

    Welcome to Major Geeks :)

    Kodo,

Thanks for the link. I use Firebird most of the time and I love tabbed browsing. I still use IE for some sites that are designed poorly (for IE only) and miss my tabs. Downloading now...

Edit: downloaded and installed. Hmm. not sure about this yet, it seems to do a lot of stuff, maybe too much even, lol. I am glad it is a seperate program, so I can still run the old IE. I'll play around with it, but I think I'd be happier if I could keep my Google toolbar and then just add tabs. But I will keep trying it for a while to get adjusted.

I really do love Firebird though. Wish Google toolbar worked with it.

I know what you mean. I make sure my sites run in IE and Opera. I figure if it looks good in opera, then it should be good with the others.

    Thanks & About this site....

I downloaded the Google Toolbar, it looks great. I am very pleased to have it and trust your opinion on it's popup blocking capabilities. I can't wait to see how it works.

Thanks to all of you here. I found this site while looking for the before mentioned popup blocker. It was listed on lavasoft. I have marked Major Geeks as a favorite and plan to visit often. I'm glad there are others who stay on the computer all day, like I do.
I would like to say to whoever is in charge:

Thanks for providing a site that makes you feel welcome, provides tons of useful info, and most importantly, does not make you feel foolish with your questions.

    Thanks Again

Tim and Jim love to hear compliments like this. I'm sure they will be pleased :)

We treat everyone as equals here. We understand that we were all once completely computer illiterate too :)

Glad you enjoy the site.. stop by the lounge and say hi to the rest of the whacko's :D

Google for Firebird. I haven't tried it yet, I just use the Google search box on the normal toolbar for Firebird. Visit the webpage, it explains what it is.

Glad you like the site. What you have experienced was exactly what we are trying to accomplish and were thrilled when people see it that way.

As an FYI, follow up, you said, you have a bar on your IE already with multiple search engines. A lot of toolbars are spyware and some do not uninstall easily, inparticular Hotbar. If you did not already, please do download Ad-Aware, use the webupdate and update to latest definitions, then run to clean out any spyware. You may still be getting random popups from installed spyware that a blocker may not stop. Check your add\remove programs and remove and toolbars, like hotbar that you no longer use.

Google for Firebird seems to work ok, but I do not see any popup blocking features (which is one of the main reason I use the google toolbar for IE). I may be missing it, so I'll keep digging.

    Regardless, thanks for the link!

Doh! I'd gotten so used to it I had forgotten. Firebird has popup blocking built into it. Silly me.

Reply to Major Attitude Re: Spyware

Thanks for you kind reply. I had a friend suggest the same thing to me when I downloaded the toolbar. The toolbar in question is a free download for anyone, provided by Home Moms Network, where I an Administrator for one of their sites.

However, on the advice from my friend, I did download Ad-ware and scanned my files. The toolbar in question did not come up in any of THE 142 FILES that did contain spyware (LOL). Needless to say, they have all been removed and I now run scans quite often.

I hope no one minds but I would like to ask another question. I just bought this computer from Dell 3 months ago, it came with a 90 day trial of 3 McAfee Products: Virus Scan, Personal Firewall Plus, and a Security something or other. The trail ends in a week or two. Would it be best to renew with the McAfee Security Suite 6, that provides all of these items for $69.95 renewal fee (it also has a lot of new features, to many to list), or is there something out there that I would do better by going with.

Let me know if I should have posted this question elsewhere. I am new here as you know, & am not really sure of the protocol.

    Thanks,
    Cat

No..I believe McAffee is horrible.. worse than Nortons and I don't think highly of Nortons.

I would try 1 of the following 2 antiviruses which are free
    Anti-Vir

    or

    AVG

For a firewall, I would use 1 of the following 2 which are also free.

    Kerio

    or

    Outpost

I've been quite happy with AVG at home. I also use the free version of ZoneAlarm for a firewall. Very happy with that as well. I use a gateway at home with a built-in firewall so ZA is not really that helpful, but I've been playing with it anyway.

Also, we use McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 7.0 at work and I can say nothing but good things about this version. Prior versions have not been the greatest but we still used them. I am not sure about home versions of McAfee, but 7.0 is a great tool. Just make sure you update DAT files often (this applies to any anti-virus software).

If Zone Alarm gets too bothersome (I did not like the latest version) try Sygate. Sygate personal acts more like the old Zone alarm. Just less configuration and interruptions.

There are a few things Sygate will not do. I think it is the most useful firewall considering the time spent setting it up.

I agree with Kodo about McAfee, it sucks up resources. I have a lisc. for Nortons from work and it can be set up to work well withoug bothering me to much.

    Thanks for the advice DOA

Thanks for the advice, I really appreciate it. There is just to much stuff out there to sort through for to suit me. I need it to say "Here I am & by the way install me to this directory." So ya'lls advice is invaluable to me.

Note to Kodo: If I duct tape the recommended anti-viruses to my hard drive, will that keep all the little buggies away?

Re: Thanks for the advice DOA

unfortunately duct tapes does not have the ability to prevent viruses from harming your computer, but it CAN keep your signifant others mouth shut at inopportune times ;)

...am I going to have to let "your significant other" in on your idea of the proper uses for duct tape?

Or should I let these guys know they have some competition?
