Both rigs are running XP and are wired to a router. I ran the setup wizard on both, disabled any firewalls and sharing is enabled on both. I can see the client folder but I can't access it due to the following error: http://img174.imageshack.us/img174/750/networkplacesbx0.th.jpg

Also, viewing the workgroups, I only see my main rig. The second rig sees nothing at all including the workgroup. Thanks all and I hope I was clear.

Have we done any tweaking of services on these machines, Augie?

I'd first ensure that the 'Computer Browser', 'Network Connections' and 'Workstation' services are running on all machines.

Default installs on both machines Mada.

    Start, run

    \\computer ip

So in other words, try to access the share via ip address.

Already tried that with address that the router has assigned it. Says network path not found.

    How about ping requests?

    Can you ping that computer?

Ping times out and now I can't access my router. What is going on?:cry

I'd give you my theory but you wouldnt believe me :)

If this is wired, please say it is ;)

Boot both machines to Safe Mode w/ Networking, and try the two above tests again.

Yes, both machines are wired to the router, as I said in my original post.:) I will try in safe mode. Thanks

Both the ping and the \\IP are unreachable in safe mode.

    Destination Host Unreachable?

What are the IP addresses of these machines? If they are 169 addresses...head back to normal mode. You did go to SafeMode w/ networking, right?

Yes, safe mode w/networking. The address I specified was 192.168.0.02 which the router gave me last night. Unfortunately I can't get in to the router now to verify. I'll try again.

BTW, while in safe mode, I couldn't access the net either with FF or IE.

You said you had disabled some firewalls. What firewall is it?

ZoneAlarm on my main rig, I took it out of the startup tab in msconfig and Windows FW disabled on both machines.

Thats not good enough augie. You gotta kill the ZA services, too, and even then may still cause problems.

    start, run, msconfig.

Services, put a check in hide all MS services.

Uncheck true vector and anything else ZA related.

I couldn't kill the service from safe mode in either Admin or my account or from my regular account, access denied. What's with that? Uninstalling ZA did the trick!:celebrate:dancer:guitar:clap The beer's on me!:drink Thank you very much for sticking with this network n00b's problem. BTW, ZA is history on my machines.

Can't you program the IP addresses of each machine on your network into Zone Alarm so it will allow access instead of getting rid of ZA on your machines?

I ran into the same problem and after reading this thread I realize my problem was more than likely also ZA.

Technically, but being unable to stop the service indicates a program malfunction.
