connected but links do not work

    my laptop says connected and I can go to webpages but no links work, I.E. I click mail and it just shows timer going around and nothing happens. Sometimes it says webpage is busy but that is for two webpages I know I can get on if I go upstairs to my desktop computer. I take laptop to work and plug into ethernet and it works fine. It just started this the other day. Had been working fine? Could router be bad? I am not a big techie so I would need specific instructions for things like checking IP address or going into router setup. Thank you..I am so frustrated. I have a dell laptop with windows XP.

    Have you tried hard wiring directly to your modem?

    Not if your desktop has no trouble getting on the internet.

    When you turn on the laptop and open a DOS window and type in
    Code:
    ifconfig
    what do you get?
