I am connected to the Internet but I can't browse or use msn messenger. Connection status is very good. There are 3 computers hooked up to the router, and they all work. I have taken one of their cables and put it into mine, and it still doesn't work.

It worked a few days ago, but the browser/msn would stop working after some time. I would just click REPAIR in Network Connections. Now it doesn't work at all. So, it's just my computer/laptop with the problem.

    Operating System : Windows XP
    Computer: Acer Aspire One

Things I have tried doing but to no avail:
    -uninstall drivers and reinstall
    -deleted winsock registry files
    -downloaded winsock fix
    -turned the firewall off
    -reset IP in command prompt
    -reset winsock in command prompt
    -contact ISP

    Welcome to Majorgeeks forums :)

Do you have (or can you transfer via another PC) an alternative browser - Firefox, Opera - to try?

Hmm, you normally use wireless but you've also tested via ethernet, correct?

Did you disable your wireless and reset the NIC when you tested with ethernet?

From the command prompt, type ipconfig /all and hit enter. Look for the DNS server, does the ip address start with a 192.168 number?

If so, your router might be doing DNS proxy. Meaning that your computer is not talking directly to your ISPs DNS servers. This could cause programs that need domain name resolution to load slow, or not load at all.

The fix is to call your ISP, get the ip address to their DNS server and enter those numbers into your computers TCP/IP configuration. This would tell your computer to talk directly to your ISPs DNS server instead of asking the home router to do name resolution. For a long term fix, the router needs to be configured to stop acting like a DNS server.

I dont know if that is the problem or not with your situation, but I see a lot of home routers that try to act as a buffer between the computers and the ISPs DNS server. Routers that do that cause a lot of strange connection problems.

    yep tested ethernet
    what is NIC?

i just hooked the wireless cable to a different port and it has been working now for several days, but it did go down yesterday although my connection was "very good".

when i did ipconfig in command prompt, the DNS server part was empty
    dns suffix search list
    connection-specific dns suffix
    node type broadcast
    ip routing enabled no
    wins proxy enabled no

when i clicked repair connection in Control Panel, DNS server showed up as this...
    connection-specific dns suffix: no.shawcable.net
    dhcp enabled yes
    autoconfiguration enabled yes
lease expires thurs sept 10 8.52.46 pm

not sure what the lease part is about.
it also gave me 2 dns servers. dns servers 64.59.160.13
    64.59.160.15
and yes the IP address is 192.168.1... number

NIC = Network Interface Card, Ethernet adapter, usually 10/100/1000 Mbs wired

I'm not sure what you mean by hooking the wireless cable to a different port ...

If you have a Gateway (your router) and 2 DNS servers showing then your connection should work fine, if it does, we then need to move on to checkout your wireless settings.

What make/model and revision number is your wireless router?

Which Aspire One model do you have?

oh i have other computers (ethernet) hooked up to a router... the wireless router is hooked up to that same router

wireless router is linksys wireless-g 2.4 ghz 54mbps
    model wrt54g v.3

acer aspire ones series model no.ZG5

    when i did have problems...
for example using windows live messenger, and it doesn't work (while the internet connection is good), it does say the gateway doesn't exist.
that's just one of the things...
sometimes it would say there is a gateway but instead a problem about a port or DNS

Ok, so can you now connect wirelessly using the Acer?

If not - and for future reference installs/reinstalls, read this page and download the correct driver (the first paragraph should be your driver).
