I have a Dell Studio 540 computer (running Windows 7-64 bit)and have acquired a monitor (Dell UltraSharp 24 Monitor - U2417HJ). Evidently my computer should have a DP port to connect with, mine doesn't, only VA G & HDMI 1.2 connector , I am told that I'll need to buy a Dongle to make this connection. Cant I just connect HDMI to HDMI ? or would everything self destruct? This new monitor doesn't have built in speakers, but neither did my old one. Please give me some guidance on this

Sure. If your computer has an HDMI port it will be an output port. And if your monitor has an HDMI port, it will be an input for the very purpose of connecting an HDMI cable.

So getting video to the monitor should not be a problem. And you should be able to connect a simple mini-stereo cable from the audio output of the computer (typically that small, light green jack) to your speakers to get audio. You may have to do some setting changes in Control Panel, but it should not be hard, and certainly not destructive.
