    Hi all

A friend wants me to connect his pc to the internet but he has a problem. The phoneline is downstairs and his pc upstairs.

Obviously one way to connect is by running an extension cable upstairs but he would rather not do this so I am considering wireless as an alternative.

    My question is this:-

What type of wireless access point should I recommend - standalone AP or router? Also any suggestions as to best make/model for someone on limited £££s would be appreciated.

    Thanks

What kind of internet are we talking about here? If its broadband (DSL or cable), you could probably get a Wireless router from somewhere fairly cheap. If its dial up, there arn't many devices that will let you dial up automatically and access the net wirelessly.

FW pointed out that you could get a wireless access point with a serial port so you could attach an external modem to it, and use that.

As far as I am aware at this stage it is dial-up.

How does the AP with external modem work?

    AP will not help.

It will be somewhat expensive, but you need to look for a Wireless Cable/DSL Router with a Serial Port.

You fit an External DialUp Modem on the serial port and connect the Modem to the Phone.

For the initial configuration of the Router and Wireless you would need to connect the Router to a computer via Cable. Once it done you can put the Modem and the Router near the phone jack and Go (this of course is pending on the Wireless capacity to work well at the distance that you need it to).

The following page does not deal with Wireless but the idea is the same: Sharing the Internet with DialUp Connection.

hey, i gotta question. what kind of dialup does he have? if its something like Juno, then nevermind. but if its AOL, Earthlink, or something of that nature. wouldnt it be cheaper to get Broadband/DSL installed? then you could get wireless router and faster internet experience:)
