When I try to connect to the internet with my ISP I get an error stating that my system does not have a modem installed. Device Manager shows the modem installed and is working properly. When I open my connections and check the properties of the connection it says "Modem Removed-Unavailable device (COM1)". Any ideas?

This may be due to certain registry keys missing in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Telephony\Providers which keys i am not sure but you will need to check this, if your not confident about dealing with registry issues wait till someone a little more experienced tells you what to do !
Hope this helps a little !

The other alternative is if you have your Xp CD, put that into the drive and click on "start", "run", then type "sfc /scannow" (leave out the quotes and don't forget the space between scf and /) this checks all O/S files and replaces the ones that might be missing/corrupted.

This reads like your DUN connection is trying to connect via an external modem, usually, internal modems are set to use COM3 or higher as COM1 and 2 were traditionally physical ports. Start > Control Panel > Phones and modems - check the properties for your modem, you should find the COM port listed (or you can run a test to find out), make a note of it.

Control Panel > Network connections, find the connection that XP is using to access the 'net, right-click it and choose Properties, now look for the COM port setting and change it to the COM port in the modem properties.

Apologies if this is not 100% accurate, it's been some time since I setup XP on dial-up ;)

Thanks for the replies. In the "phone and modem options" window under the modems tab is says the modem is attached to COM3. In "network connections" it shows "modem removed-unavailable device (COM1)".

I've changed the com setting in network connections as the same in phone and modem settings and still no luck.
