My friend has a new ACer laptop, and is having trouble connecting to the internet via her wireless card at a friends who has a wireless router. I am asking this for her to get some help. Also, she would like help just in case she has trouble connecting to a normal cable line as well. Can you give some advice and tips to help get her connected?

The version is in the title of the thread. Windows Vista Home Basic lol. And I think she said it wasn't detecting a wireless network. I tried asking if her wireless card was there or whatnot. and she said that it was all built into the computer. So I dunno. But Ill check those links out.

Ooops! new glasses are needed I did read the title and version and must have been on autopilot!

Which Model ACER and is she using the ACER wireless connection tool or the one built into Vista.

On some ACER models their is a small Wireless button to turn the Wireless on/off.

If its the ACER one I personally found it to be troublesome, so use the Vista built in one, to try this one click Start > Connect To > then find the wireless network of her friends, then highlight and click Connect > at this point she will be asked for the Encryption Key ( if set ) her friend hopefully knows this, by either having set it manually or its sometimes located on the bottom of the wireless router which some ISPs give out.

is she picking up any wireless signals? she might have to go to control panel and enable the card, and/or (as mentioned) see if there is an actual switch to enable the card (signal). if she is seeing other wireless signals (and not their friends), it could be that their friend has disabled the ssid signal (that's what i do) within the router? i normally leave the signal enabled until i get everything working, then i disable it. anyway, g/l - sos

Ok, Here is what I found out..its an ACCER 5220-101G08Mi And at her cousins, she could not pick up the wireless signal, however she did find a few at her place, though they were passworded so she couldn't connect to em. Why would it not let her find one at her cousins, when they have a wireless router at their place for things like that?

ok, so it looks like the wireless adapter is working. my 1st guess would be that at her cousins place, they probably have the ssid signal disabled. if this is the case, the easiest way i know, would be logging into the router and enabling the ssid signal. if they knew the exact name of their routers signal (ssid), then she could manually type it in, as well as the password (if it has one). it's easier for me to set it up with the ssid enabled, get the other comps setup, then i disable the ssid signal.

this is a screenshot (link above) of what i have around me. mine is "2Wire291", all those names on the right side, is thier ssid signal (i hope i said that right).

i'm assuming her wireless adapter is built into the laptop? what brand and model # is her cousins router?. anyway, this all i can think of for now. g/l, sos
