I was referred to this site because I am just starting off. I did my first hard drive formatting and installed windows 98....It took me days to get all the drivers, but I think I am over that...I have two other p.c. on a wired router(dynex) running of a speedstream 5100 dsl modem. I want to get the win98 p.c. on the system also. I have a manual that walks you through manually inserting an i.p. address but every time I re-boot as instructed whe nthe system powers back up there is no i.p. address. Can anyone help me out here?

You shouldn't have to manually set up an IP address. Plug in the PC to the router as you normally before you power up. When Windows has loaded to the desktop, got to the Control Panel > Internet Options. Then click the Connections tab. Be sure the circle for "Never dial a connection" is selected. Then click "Setup". In each Window that opens, select the option to connect through the network or LAN. In the first and second windows that open, it will be the bottom selection. The third window will ask if you want to automatically detect settings. Many people are under the belief that this box must be checked. In reality, all the boxes here should be UNchecked. Checking the top box will slow down the opening of your home page. The next will ask you about setting up email, and you'll choose No. The final window will ask if you want to connect immediately. If the cable is plugged in and you haven't entered any IP addresses (or you have entered correct ones) you should be able to connect. If not, reboot the PC and launch Internet Explorer. If you want the Win98 PC to be able to share files with other PC on your home network, then you will probably need to set IP addresses. Here's some links that should help:
http://fpx.mhtc.net/TechPages/win/win_DSL/98.htm (this is a step-by-step with screenshots that goes through the procedure I just described; ignore the heading that says Windows XP DSL Setup. It's actually for Win98)
    http://www.onecomputerguy.com/networking/tcpip.htm (this is more technical)

Good luck! I hope this helps!

I will try...But to do it I will have to disconnect on this p.c.(do not have anotherwire to connect yet).........Thanks for the advice

ok I tried it.......I went to control panel and went to internet properties, selected connection there are the following options on this page:
use connection wizard connect using modem
    connect using local area network

proxy server (checked) access internet using proxy server
    address (empty box) port(empty box)
(checked) bypass proxy for local(internet) addresses

    Automatic configuration
your network admin. may have given you the name of a server that will config. internet explorer (and there is a box labeled "config")

at this point I am not sure what to do?

I had trouble with this too and this was what I had to do. My ethernet card came with a disc which I had to run before I installed my card. After running the disc I powerd down then I installed the card. After it found the card, it installed the drivers, then I hooked my cable up to the internet which I then opened up another can of worms because a lot of sites don't support 98 which there is ways around that with updating stuff as you will experience.

bad thing is I do not have a disk with my card it was given to me, but I am pretty sure the card drivers are in.

OK- once again... when you open Internet Options in the Control Panel, click the Connections tab, then click the Setup button. The first window that opens, select the bottom choice (for LAN). The next window, again select the LAN option which is the bottom circle. In the next window UNCHECK each box. There should be 3 empty boxes before clicking next. The next one that opens is an email question and you'll answer No. And I believe that's it. Once again, this link shows you step-by-step what to do. It says to leave the box checked for 'Automatically detect settings' and I say to uncheck it. Either way doesn't matter. If it is checked, your home page will open slower. Here's that link again: http://fpx.mhtc.net/TechPages/win/win_DSL/98.htm Once again. ignore the heading that says 'Windows XP DSL'; the instructions are for Win98.
    Good luck!

Nahhhh... no problems, no worries ;) If you could post a screen shot of the screen that you're talking about, it would really help. Here's a link to 'how to post a screen shot':

And here is a link to 'how to attach items to a post or thread':

I haven't used Win98 in some time, but I'm pretty sure the steps I gave you (and the link) are accurate. So please post a screen shot or two and we'll go from there!
    Thanks!

I have a picture of the screen, but cannot upload it(says it is too big). I used my digital camea to take a pic of the screen. Not sure how to edit it to upload.

  13. dlb

    dlb MajorGeek

Did you check those links? If you have the pic already, try 'zipping' it with WinZip or a similar program. WinXP has built-in file 'zipping'. Right click the file, go to 'Send To' and select 'Compressed File' then upload the compressed file. If you're not running XP, download and install TUGzip (it's free). Click next all the way through the install until you see a screen with a menu running down the left side. There's a 'Select All' button under the menu, click it, then click Next or Finish. When it's done, a TUGZip explorer window will open, close it. Then right click the file you want to zip/unzip and use one of the options in the right-click menu....

I have xp followed steps and still too big............Sorry for the delays here, but I am ignorant when it comes to all this.....It is quite frustrating here...

  15. dlb

    dlb MajorGeek

OK- you can try to edit the pic by using Paint to crop the areas that don't need to be in the picture, saving just the relevant part. That will probably reduce the size. You could also save it in a different format after cropping (like .png or .jpg). Or you can use the 'PrtScr' method to take a screenshot. It is outlined in one of the how-to links I posted above, but I'll go thru it here: when the window is open that you want to capture as a screenshot, move the mouse to the top 'title' bar of the window and click it once to make sure it has been 'selected'; hold down the Alt key and press the PrtScr key (it might be Print Screen). This captures the selected window and stores it invisibly in the clipboard. Now open Paint (it's in Accessories off the Start button). Move the mouse to the Paint title bar and click once. Now move the mouse into the Paint 'canvas' and hold Ctrl and press V. The window you want to save should be visible in Paint now. Click File > Save As. Browse to a location where you want to save it (the desktop makes it easy to find), type in a name, and select a file type. DO NOT use the default choice because it will probably be too big to upload. I usually use .PNG or .JPG. Since your PC doesn't have web access, copy the pic to a CD or floppy or thumb drive, then copy it to the XP computer and upload it....

(we'll get this figured out one way or another, darn it!)

Now that I have the screenshot, I must say that I have never seen a connection window like that before. What version of Internet Explorer is it? To find out, launch it (double click the blue 'e' on your desktop), naturally it won't connect; click on Help at the top, then on 'About...' and you'll get the version. I'm thinking you have a REALLY old version of Internet Explorer and it needs to be upgraded. Visit this link http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...cb-5e5d-48f5-b02b-20b602228de6&DisplayLang=en and download Internet Explorer 6. Burn the setup file to a CD and install it on the Win98 PC. Then you'll be able to follow the steps above to connect to the web... or you could probably use an alternative browser like Firefox, but you'd still need to burn the setup file to a CD to install on the Win98 computer.

Alright it is downloaded....Do I have to havethe p.c. connected to install? If I do I need to shut this one down....I will be back...

If you want to use FireFox, you don't need to mess with Internet Explorer at all. But it is highly recommended that you do because without it, you may have problems with some software not being compatible with the old version you have now. I found this link while poking around the web looking for soultions for you:
    http://www.compu-docs.com/ieadmininstall.htm
However, you will still need to download the 'ie6setup.exe' file on a PC with web access, then move it to the Win98PC by burning it to CD or putting it on a floppy or whatever... I attached the zipped Internet Explorer setup file here for you to make life a tad easier (it may be a bit late for that ;) )

OK... well here's some new info. That file I attached is only a setup file and now that I think about it, it may not work on the Win98 computer becuase in order to install, it needs internet access.... so.... here's a link to the FULL VERSION of Internet Explorer 6.0. After this is installed, run the attached file above to update to Service Pack 1.
    http://www.cloudnet.com/downloads/ie6.php
The link to download is right at the top; it's the first underlined thing you'll see.

Phew.... good luck. Download the file from the link above (it's 48mb) burn it, install it.

  23. joking1970

    joking1970 Private E-2

LOL>>>>>>> you really have patience...I am downloading the full ie right now, just about to burn it...Should I delete out the version 4 or will it auto replace?

  24. dlb

    dlb MajorGeek

VERSION 4?!?!?!?!? Wow! That's old. No wonder we were having issues! There is no need to do anything with version 4 except to celebrate it's demise. Just burn the full version to a CD and install it on the Win98 PC. You may want to copy it from the CD to the hard drive on the Win98 computer before installing, and run it from there and not the CD. Sometimes these files need to extract before they install, and if you run it from the CD it will try to extract to the CD and it will error out.....

I see a light at the end of the tunnel.....

    ;)

It's not patience.... I have an OCD about leaving a PC problem unsolved.... it's a good thing my boss is out of town today or else you'd have to get help from someone else, or wait 'til I'm off work ;)

  25. joking1970

    joking1970 Private E-2

Alright I have version6 on the p.c.....I tried to run the setup and it won't work...Also tried the steps you described before and the screens match up....but wants to find my modem and can't.....What next?

  26. dlb

    dlb MajorGeek

You tried to run which setup?
Are you sure you have the network card's driver installed? Go to your device manager and make sure you have no exclamation points or question marks or red 'X'...

Hey.... I broke 2000 posts!!! Yippeee!!! :D (yeah, big deal, right? rolleyes)

  27. joking1970

    joking1970 Private E-2

congrats on the 2000, half were probably on me.....I did check to see if my network card had any "x's" or ? and it does not....Under network adapter(when expanded) I have two the first is:Dial up Adaptor and the second is Intel 8255x-based PCI Ethernet Adapter(10/100)......................Also the setup I was referingn to was the first ie 6 that I downloaded............I am also downloading firefox at the present, should I need to load it also?

  28. dlb

    dlb MajorGeek

Jeeez... I'm all screwed up.... the first ie6? That isn't the 48mb one is it? If the 48mb one installed (and that's one you should install first) then don't worry about the other small one (it's about 480k I think)... let's get you connected... you don't NEED Firefox. It's an alternative browser. If you get it downloaded and installed on the w98 PC, go ahead and run it and see if you can surf with it. You can then deal with IE after our brains have stopped melting.

  29. joking1970

    joking1970 Private E-2

ok we are all straightened out here....lol....yes ie 6 is in, no I will not install the other(smaller one) and yes I tried firefox and it did not work either....Next thought is, is there a possibility my network card is not correct in the devise manager, or would there be a x or ? if it was wrong(there is neither)....Also should I remove the dial up one in devise manager?

  30. dlb

    dlb MajorGeek

OK- ie6 is in. Cool. Firefox didn't work; I'm not surprised. I'm assuming you rebooted the PC after finishing the ie6 install. Can you surf yet? Have you gone to Control Panel > Internet Options > Connections > Setup and do all that stuff? If you do that and reboot, and then try to surf with Internet Explorer, you should be surfing. Do NOT remove ANYTHING from the Device Manager.....

  31. dlb

    dlb MajorGeek

I hope things are going well... at least we've managed to install a somewhat current version of Internet Explorer. Version 4 was discontinued in late 1999 (I think). Anyway- I'm going to sign out now for a bit. I'm still at work and need to get back to it. I've been surfing the web most of the day and now I need to get caught up. ;) I'll be home in about an hour, maybe an hour and a half, and I'll check my PMs and I'll check here to see how things are going. Good luck!

Just to be sure my drivers are correct here are all the numbers on my network

card... first there is an fcc i.d. ejmnpdpila84758
    (e139761)

there are two bar code stickers with these numbers

    352433-004 01004826613

    00a0c916ec4a

and on the board itself tereis this etched in it

    pb352434-004

I am currently looking to see if I can identify any of these numbers to make sure it is an
    Intel 8255x-based PCI Ethernet Adapter(10/100)

  34. dlb

    dlb MajorGeek

OK... I'm back for bit. Click Start > Run and type command and press Enter. This will bring up a command prompt window. Type ping 209.131.36.158 and press Enter (that is the Yahoo! IP address). If you get an error or a message that says 'Request timed out' then the problem is with the network card or it's drivers or the cable. If the card and drivers are OK, it should look like the screenshot below. While in the command prompt window, also type ipconfig /all and press Enter; be sure to put a space before the slash /. It should like something like the 2nd screenshot below (I censored it). The top DNS line should say something like "yourisp.com" and the other three lines will be numbers that look like 111.222.333.444. Write down the info provided by ipconfig, you might need it. At the beginning of all this, you mentioned something about typing in some IP adresses. If these are still there, they may be preventing you from connecting to the internet. I have a bunch of links here that might help. Some of the info here will be for different brands of networks cards, and some of the info is specific to the place I got it (like one link is from a college help desk) but there's a lot of general stuff here that should help. You could also pick up the phone and call your ISP and tell 'em what's going on, and have them walk you through setting it up. Once IE6 was installed, it shouldn't have been this hard; it should have connected after going thru the Connections > Setup routine.... anyway, here's more links, and the two screen shots. Good luck!

I didn't do the ping correct...I just did it and got the requested time out

  37. dlb

    dlb MajorGeek

Because you got the 'request timed out' and the 'unreachable host' something is wrong; the signal is not getting out. I think the problem may be in your router. Read the router manual and make sure you don't have it blocked somehow. Try doing another ping test; this time type ping 127.0.0.1 This is your PC 'loopback' address and will tell us if the network card is working correctly.... seriously.... read your router manual; log in to the router and check the settings and maybe reset it to clear any settings that might be causing problems; call your internet provider. You could be surfing in 10 minutes if you call 'em.... yeah, I know, nobody likes talking to tech "support" in India or Pakistan, but sometimes it's the best and easiest way to go....

Well, it's morning here (about 8.45am) and I'm on my way to work. I figured I'd check in and see what was up.... I'll check in periodically whilst working, but I don't think I can be on 'standby' like I was yesterday. ;) I do get paid, so I should probably actually do some work. :innocent
    Good luck!

You need to enable DHCP in the router. But, do we even know if the router hardware will work with a 98 computer?
The oldest computer I had hooked up was 98SE.

The ping for 127.0.0.1 was testing your network card; 4 sent and 4 rec'd is perfect. That means your network card is OK, and (as I suspected) the router is the problem. Read the manual, and follow the instructions for Win98. They may be different than for Win98SE so be sure to differentiate between the two....

Have you pinged the router from the Win 98 PC?

What configuration settings do you have for Enternet 300? What is your ISP or your ISP specific configuration settings?

Here are some FAQ that may help you identifying an Enternet 300 issue: http://adsl.cutw.net/enternet300-faq.html

EnterNet for Windows 95/98 and NT 4.0 consists of a 32-bit application (the EnterNet "Dialer") and an NDIS 3.0 compliant driver that supports the Windows operating systems.

EnterNet runs over any standard NDIS 3.0 or above compatible Ethernet or DSL Adapter, including USB attached adapters. The Ethernet Adapter is attached by cable to a Local Area Network (LAN). In general, if you're currently able to connect to other Windows systems via LAN, you have sufficient hardware to run EnterNet.

You may already have an Ethernet Adapter installed and the Microsoft TCP/IP protocol bound to the adapter. If so, you're ready to install EnterNet. If you haven't already installed your Ethernet Adapter, you must do this before installing EnterNet. The Microsoft TCP/IP protocol should also be bound to the Ethernet Adapter. [/quoe]

I don't hve 98SE running any more so I can check what I did to bind the TCP/IP protocol to the ethernet adapter.

    Start here
    http://www.homenethelp.com/web/howto/net-update.asp
and follow through on all information for 98.

I am at the link right now reading it....Currently I am installing win98 on another p.c. when that is done I will fire up the tower I am trying to connect to the internet(I am using its monitor, keyboard and mouse at the moment) When I do I will post a reply....I have to say all you kind hearted helpers are teaching me alot.....At least I am learnig to install o.s.....I do not really understand what I am doing, but I have successfully installed win98 3 times(3 different towers).....lol........My kids now each have their own p.c. at my house and their mother's.....I am trying to get just one to connect to internet for my home.....You guys are making 6 yr old girls very happy..And helping me alot....Thank you all very much.

I have been trying to follow all steps suggested and having no luck, I also have a couple other post on here for other issues with other towers so I jump from one project to the other..........Basically I have not been able to connect, the pig to the ethernet card is good and that is as far as I can get......I did go through the link for the tcp/ip protocol I tried to follow the steps and the only thing that happened is now when I boot up I get a screen that saysthere was a missing or removed devise in system.ini a devise that no longer exists it tells me I need to remove or uninstall and the missing file is vserver.vxd, then if you hit any key to continue win98 boots up and the p.c. runs fine except for connecting to the internet, enternet 300 boots up and tries to connect but fails.

  49. plodr

plodr MajorGeek Super Extraordinaire Moderator Staff Member

Take one of the 98 towers and connect it directly to the speedstream modem. Does it get on the internet?
We have to figure out if it is a) a win 98 problem b) a modem problem c) a router problem or d) the act that the modem and router might both have firewalls and you are trying to break out through two firewalls.

To correct the missing vserver.vxd error
