    Hello all,

Long time infrequent lurker and first time poster - I have tried everything I can think of and need your expert advice. I have a desktop PC (XP) that has a network connection through ethernet, but no internet browser allows access to the net at all.

    Firefox never would open up.

IE opens but does not get a connection.

I also note that there is a program that always seems to be running at restart, "helpermsglistenerwnd" that holds up restarts and may be a part of the problem.

I have tried resetting winsock but have had no success.

Below is a Hijackthis (forgive me if I am running afoul of proper protocol).

Thanks in advance for any help/advice any of you can provide.

    Hi

helpermsglistenerwnd, is part of iTunes, while iTunes shouldnt cause issues with your browsers, I would update it to latest version or uninstall and reinstall again.

Can you say in iTunes connect to the iTunes Store? Does Windows Live Messenger or other messenging applications work, does your Comodo Internet Security application update?

If yes to any other applications apart from browsers can connect to the internet, then disable your Comodo Firewall to test, (or also boot to Safe Mode with Networking and see if IE or Firefox will connect) if they do connect then check your Firewalls software list to see if browsers or internet connect has been blocked.

While Hijackthis to me doesnt show much untoward, to be honest its overused and not the best application to chack for malware as its limited, so to check if malware is the cause of this as it sounds as if it is then please read and follow the following READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide and once finished please start a new thread in the Malware Forum plus a guide on how to attach the logs HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post

Thanks very much for your help Halo. The Comodo program was uninstalled but still has an .exe that runs for some reason. Don't know if that's the problem.

No other programs seem to be able to connect, though it is clear that I have a LAN through a wired connection that otherwise should be usable. In fact, I am reading and sending this message on the same modem and ethernet, just on a different PC. The damaged PC is on the same desk but not connected.

I will uninstall Itunes and see where that takes it.

I had run SuperAntiSpyware and MalwareBytes both, but both showed up clean. I hadn't made sure that no files were hidden, though, so I am going through that process now.

I have no firewall on the computer now, having uninstalled Comodo and completely disabled (as much as I can, anyway) the Microsoft Windows Firewall. I also have uninstalled AVG antivirus.

Any other suggestions or ideas as to what might be causing this, i.e. Windows SP3, winsock problem, etc.?

So I uninstalled Itunes, and that takes care of the helpermsglistenerwnd problem at restart...but, still no connection.

I went through Safe mode and attempted again to reset the winsock but it did not work. I note that Internet Explorer, under Internet Options --> Connections does not have any network listed in the box labeled "Dial-up and Virtual Private Network settings." Could that be it?

I am at a complete loss.

You should call your ISP to get help. Take advantage of warranty guys if you have any for your computer.

I would start thinking about a clean install and start from scratch. I always clean install once a year. Back up everything to disk, like bookmarks. Save all videos and pics to disks. Etc.
