Hi everyone, after getting my internet sorted out yesterday (thank you Tim!) i'm trying to share my home broadband connection between my pc and my Iphone using a wifi usb adapter. I know this can be done as i've read of many others being able to do this but i've been trying for hours now and feel like i'm just going round in circles and would love it if anyone can point to where i'm going wrong.

    Here's my current setup:
Home broadband going to a wired netgear router going into my pc.
I have 3 network connections showing in my control panel:
    1) a 1394 connection termed a "net adapter" (no idea what this connection does, it's been on my pc since day one
    2) a local area connection
    3) a wireless network connection which i think i've managed to create properly but i have no idea

icons on my taskbar are telling me the adapter is connected to the network "iphone" and i also have an icon telling me "Wireless Network Connection 2 (peer to peer) signal strength excellent, status connected"

i've switched my iphone to wifi and it says it found and connected to the wifi connection "iphone" after i entered the network code i created.

but nothing happens. when i try to check my email on my iphone it just says checking for mail but this lasts until i come out of it. i know very little about ip addresses and think this might be the problem, as i've read that after creating and connecting both devices to the wirless connection i now have to enable Internet Connection Sharing between my LAN connection and the wireless one.

I've tried creating a network bridge and putting both of these into it but when i choose to put the wireless one in my pc disconnects from the wireless connection.

I've also tried leaving both out of the bridge and selecting Internet Connection Sharing on my LAN connection but when i click ok i get the following message:
"An error occurred while Internet Connection Sharing was being enabled.

Internet Connection Sharing cannot be enabled. A LAN connection is already configured with the IP address that is required for automatic IP addressing."

Does anyone have any idea how to make this work? I feel like i'm not far awy from succeeding but feel like all i'm doing now is going over the same thing again and again.
Do i need to set static IP addresses for every one of these three connections and also one on my iphone? And if i do what do i do with the entries needed for DNS?

Please please help if you can, i'm rapidly approaching the end of my ability to cope with something i know must be simple!!

Also, i've attatched a screenshot showing my network connections and the message i'm getting in case that's any use too.

    Hi

The way I did it was as follows.

Go to settings on your iphone, then wifi. Assuming your router has it's wifi on, the iphone should detect it. Connect to your router. The iphone will ask you to enter the passcode which should be on the back of your router. Hey presto, you're on the net!

If you are asking a completely different question to the one I thought you were asking, I apologise. But maybe it will help someone else.

HI scooter, cheers for the reply but unfortunately it's not a wireless router i'm using.

My set up is: 1) a wired netgear router with a cable going into the phone socket and a cable from the router going into my pc
    2) a wifi usb adapter connected by a usb cable to my pc
    3) my iphone

I think this is termed reverse tethering your iphone. I want to use the usb adapter to beam the internet coming from my wired router through my pc so that my iphone can pick it up. I know this works as i've seen many people mention it on the net before and it's advertised that this is what usb adapters do (they can act as devices to connect other home computers in a wireless network with the computer connected to the wired router acting as the sharing device.

I thought the problem may be that to enable ICS you need to have the IP address 192.168.0.1 available. So i've changed my router to 192.168.1.11 with a subnet mask for my LAN network connection as 255.255.0.0 (as the router is now in a different address range). But it still doesn't work :(

Can anyone help with this please?

I might have a solution for you. I have been thinking of a way but dont have an itouch or iphone to test the idea.

try seting up and Ah doc connection and briging your lan with your wifi and try to connect your phone to the network.

I'm with sabathx, sounds like it's missing a step, needs Ad Hoc.

I searched this step by step that might help

    From http://gadgetsandyou.blogspot.com/20...ion-on-pc.html

I am assuming that you are using windows XP or Vista. I am assuming that your ethernet is already configured properly for accessing internet. We first need to make your PC/laptop capable of talking to the iphone and viceversa. Follow the below steps to setup an adhoc network between the PC and the iphone.

    1. Go to control panel -> network connections.
    2. Right click on "Wireless network connection" and choose properties
    3. Choose "Wireless Networks" tab.
    4. Click the "Add" button, in "Preferred networks" section.
    5. Give "iphone-net" as SSID (you can choose any other name)
    6. Select "Open" for "network authentication"
    7. Select "Disabled" for "data encryption"
    8. Tick the checkbox saying "This is a computer-to-computer(ad hoc) network..."
    9. You need not change anything else in the other two tabs.
    10. Save your settings, by pressing OK in all the places. If everything goes fine, in your iphone, you will be able to see "iphone-net" as one of the available wi-fi networks when you turn on the wi-fi in the iphone. Do not connect to it yet. The procedure ahead is very simple if you have DHCP available on your ethernet. i.e if you automatically get an IP when you connect the LAN cable. Most of the ADSL broadband modems have this functionality. They assign an IP to the PC, when the LAN cable is connected. If you are not a geek you mostly would use this feature to get an IP for your PC.

For now, let us assume that you have DHCP available on your ethernet, where you have internet connection. (If you do not have DHCP, you should follow some extra steps that I mentioned at the end of this tutorial). Follow the steps to create a network bridge.

    1. You will have at-least have two entries in your network connections.
    2. One will be of the ethernet, and another will be of the wireless network.
    3. Select the two connections (by doing ctrl+left click).
    4. While both the connections are selected, right click and select "bridge connections"
    5. It will take a little while to bridge connections.
    6. You will get one more entry in network connections with name "Network Bridge"

You are almost ready to go. Do your routine exercise whichever you follow to be able to access the internet on your PC. For e.g starting your ADSL modem, and/or connecting the LAN cable etc. Once you are able to access internet on your PC, do the following on your iphone.

    1. Turn on the wifi
    2. Select iphone-net that will be shown in the available networks.
    3. Click the small blue round arrow on the right
    4. It will give more details about the connection.
    5. You should see the IP that is in the same range as that of your PC.
    6. Open the safari browser, and open some website. It should work.
    Enjoy!!

If you have windows 7 then life is easy, I found a program called connectify that literally takes your internet connection IE cable lan internet and uses you wireless card to brodcast it as an access point. I have tested it on my computer and connected an ipad to it, no issues. Unfortunately this don't solve what I have been trying to figure out and that's how to use my blackberry internet on an ipod touch. In the same method that tetherberry transfers internet to my computer by bridging the blackberry with my computer. Anyone have a suggestion
