I just recently set my computer to use a static IP and ever since that my connection drops out every so often and the only thing that fixes it is turning the router off and on. While I have a wireless router for my house, my computer is connected to it by ethernet, the rest through wireless; though both wired and wireless computers lose connection. What could it be?

I don't think the cause of your problem is because you change your computer to a static IP address. Its possible the problem may have just started around the same time.

The next time you notice the connection is down try to ping your router.

Do you have any torrent programs running on your network?
I had a router that would loose all connections when a torrent application was in use because too many connections were being created. I had to upgrade my router to resole my issue.

Right next time the connection drops ping or try to open the web interface to your router. If that works, check the connection with the router and your ISPs modem / router (if they are separate units). Most routers have a WAN section that will tell you if your still connected.

Did you reserve the IP you have staticly set on the computer?
You may want to change the scope of the DHCP to exclude the numbers you want to staticaly assign.
