Connection keeps dropping

Stupid I know, but someone gave me a "cracked" version of windows xp pro, I have got XP Home Edition, but I liked some of the features of XP pro so gave it a go, however it was a nightmare, it totally f**ked up my computer, wouldn't install my broadband modem and kept going into safe mode. Yeah yeah my own fault I know and served me right, should buy the software properly :-( but don't we all do it at some point...??

Anyway, I did a system restore with the disks that came with the computer, all seems set up ok, except that my broadband connnection keeps dropping every couple of minutes. It is not the broadband modem, as it is working fine on a laptop, also I have scanned it for viruses and used hijack this, and everything seems ok. Can anyone help? Thanks, Jake

Check to see if disconnect while idle in not ticked.....

in an IE window click Tools > Internet Options > Connections tab.

In the settings box, click on your connection and then the Settings button.

Then click on the Properties button - Options tab. Set the "Idle time before hanging up" to your choice. I use never.

Click OK. Then click the Advanced button and make sure there are no ticks in the boxes next to "Disconnect when idle" and "Disconnect if connection no longer needed"

or another one that disconnects you is if you use OE and its checking mail every few minutes and has the option disconnect in Tools > Options > Connection and untick "disconnect after sending and recieving" > Apply
