Hi Everyone, I am having an intermittant connection failure and it is driving me nuts! I can fix it by power cycling everything ie. modem, router, computer and back up in that order but I don't know how to keep it from happening again. I don't know what is causing it and I have scanned this thing to the bone so I'm reasonably sure it's not virus related. Is there a program that can show me what is occuring in real time? I would really welcome any help thanks.

Have you checked the power settings on the NIC?
Possible Power Save Mode enabled or something to that effect?

Have you considered that it may be line related rather than your equipment?
What are the circumstances of the disconnections?
Time of day, periodic or random interval, other users?

Hey lbmest and studiot, Thanks for the responses. I have not experienced a disconnect for two days now and the only thing that has changed is I run firefox now instead of IE and if I do run IE it's in sandboxie. I don't know the specifics but when it's good I'm happy! I never really liked IE anyway.

Where is the disconnection between the Router and the Internet, or between The Router and your computers?

Bad mouthing one Browser or other is Not a technological answer. I doubt that the problem is Browsers related. There are millions of people that use both Browsers successfully.

Please forgive me cat5e. It was not my intention to "bad mouth" any one browser and I will not do it again. I am sure that the problem has to do with my ignorance. I hope my misstep will not keep you from advising me. Your help in the past has been of great value. Thank you again for taking the time to respond and I hope to hear from you again, no matter if it's advice or to school me about some other stupid mistake.

The exact same thing is happening to my computer. I have been power cycling every day now for weeks.

I am taking the modem to TW in the morning and hopefully I can exchange it for a new one. I have tried everything including the suggestions that were offered to me through MG...nothing is working anymore. It is frustrating and wastes my time trying to figure out what is wrong...

Oh, I read something on my computer...WINS PRIMARY NOT CONFIGURED or something like that. What does that mean? Anything to do with not staying connected?

no, that means your not using a wins server, which is fine.

Ok, that's good then because I wouldn't know where to start with that:cry

But in power cycling, I noticed that a plastic clip from one end of the cable lines is broken off. I will go out and buy one to replace it. Now I am wondering if all this time, it's because the cable is loose and I lose connection...I wasn't looking at the cable ends...Live and learn but soooo frustrating...Thanks for your help. I rarely get replies...so I appreciate this.
