I am on this LAN for years. It has always worked just fine. I get a disconnection notice with the red "X ". I put new ends on the old cable, no luck??? I have installed a new cable with new ends that works with another computer but will not work with my computer. From time to time I get a connection with the yellow caution sign, limited or no connectivity. Do I have a motherboard problem?

I can run of a wireless connection. That is how I am contecting Major Geeks. I want to return to my good old cable system and be done with the wireless that is only more or less usable.

    I'm stumped!

    Thanks for any help!

I would suspect the NIC on the offending computer. Is it a laptop or desktop computer? Can you try the Network Interface Card from another computer?

Also, you say the cable worked on another computer, was that computer used on your network setup?

You can understand my frustration! My computer is a desktop and yes, the other computer was and is used on on the net out or the same router, in a different cable.

Can you try the NIC in the working computer in the offending computer? Or if they are on the motherboard, perhaps you can borrow a PCI NIC to try?

The connection is on the motherboard. PC Chips M863AG/G It has two expantion slots. One is being used for my wireless and the other for a sound card. Is there such a thing as a "slot expander" or do I have to replace one of the two cards?

Any thought about soldering in a new reciever into the motherboard?

My soldering skills are pretty much nonexistant, can't advise you there. I would remove one of the cards. We are just testing to see if the onboard one is messed up.
