Hi all. First time poster on here so be kind lol.

Situation is I bought a second hand laptop-compaq presario CQ56. When I got home I turned it on and hooked it up to the wireless router using the passkey. Its a bt home hub3. Laptop conected to router with no problem but not to the internet. On the connection centre there is an X between the router and internet. I tried using hardwire but same situation. The strange thing is all the other devices conect no problem to the router and the internet.

Any help will be much appreciated. Hope I haven't just bought an expensive paperweight.

Greetings, darkavenger45, and welcome to MajorGeeks.

A few more details about the machine might help - Operating System and Service Pack #, any installed networking software, protection programs that might be causing conflicts, the exact Compaq model number (it'll be something like Presario CQ56-419WM, for example), etc.

One thing you might try is a DNS flush since it's a used device - follow the steps listed here for your OS.
