    Hello,

My Dell Vostro 400 is having a problem connecting to websites. It seems like 80% of the time I get the connection timed out message. Jupiter Support charged me $150.00 and did not fix the problem. My ISP did tests on my router and said the problem must be my computer because the router was working properly.

I performed all the malware tests and have the logs if you need to see them. My antivirus has not detected anything but parts of it are not working either. Sometimes if I unplug the router, disable and enable the network connection, repair the connection, close and reopen Firefox, run CCleaner, or reboot it will work better for awhile. Then it will start getting time outs again. I'm disabled so I am trying to avoid having to take the computer to a repair shop. Can you help? Thank you.

Well, I guess I downloaded and ran all those tests and logs for nothing :(

I don't know, they just said to try cleaning the cache and I have done that multiple times. Thanks for trying to help, though.

Have you replaced the Ethernet cable?

No, but I was thinking about trying. Do you think it could cause this kind of problem? I will try a new one and see what happens. Thank you :)

Since your ISP says router is fine, we can concentrate our troubleshooting on your computer. Your AntiVirus is not detecting any malware so it might be a hardware/driver issue.

    1. Make sure the connection is not loose. Unplug the cable from computer to your router and connect the same cable to another computer. Check whether it goes online.

    2. Disable Windows Firewall for a while and try to access Internet

    3. Make sure proxy settings on your web browser is correct.

    4. Make sure your ISP is providing the same Internet speed they offers :)

lets try an figure out where the problem may be. Go here and download WinMTR.

its a small tool that runs a continous ping and tracert at the same time.

open winmtr and in the host box put your default gateway and press start. while that one is running open winmtr again and a another window will come up. this time in the host box type google.com and click start. watch these run and see if one or both of them start dropping connection.

Ive attached a sample winmtr report to explain. This is what i get when i ping and tracert google.com. what your mainly looking for is for your final destination to be recieving a high majority of the packets sent. on mine the final site was dfw06s27-in-f4.1e100.net and it got sent and received 48 packets in the short time i let it run. if it would have said 48 sent and 20 received then we would have to look up the list to see where the losses started occurring whether it be at your computer, modem, or in your isp's network.

let it run about 5 minutes and attach it in a txt file if you dont mind.

If the ping and tracert checks out fine then the next thing you could try is another browser like Google Chrome or Internet Explorer.

Thank you for your help. I am attaching the winMTR files.

I tried a new ethernet cord but it did not help.

One thing I noticed while reading some other threads is that when I go to the link that tells you your ip address, it is the same every time, even after I unplug the router and try again. I know I am not supposed to have a static IP address so could this have something to do with it?

    when you said,

If you do any one of those things it will work again for a little while or if you do all those things?

There doesn't seem to be a pattern. I just keep trying different things until eventually a page will load. I think rebooting seems to work the best, but even that doesn't always work.

ok lets try something else. next time it goes down go to command prompt and ping your default gateway. if that is successful try to ping 74.125.227.34. if that is successful try to ping google.com. to open command prompt you can click start, run, and type cmd and press ok.
sorry if this is starting to get repetitive but just trying to narrow things down.

I tried pinging everything you listed and it all came out ok. Nothing was lost. Thank you for helping me. I don't care if it is repetitive. I would stand on my head and spit BBs if it would help, lol.

Don't know if this info is useful but I have some errors in the event log. Some of them are Service Control Manager 7024 - Remote Access Service terminated
with service specific error 1003, Remote Access 20103 - Unable to load C:\WINDOWS\System32\ipxrtmgr.dll, and IPXRouterManager 20118 - Cannot start routing protocol. There are some other Service Control Manager errors too.

    Thanks again.

Interesting. IPX is old Novel networking protocol. Why is that loaded on your machine. Likely nothing to do with your problem, but should be cleaned up at some point.
