My friend has a Toshiba Satellite laptop running Vista with some connection issues. I've been trying to help him but I've ran out of things to try that I know of. Essentially the wired and wireless connections will connect to the router, however will not connect to the internet, also you can see the other computers on the network, but you cant access them. Also when I attempt to go to the ip address of the router on the laptop it wouldnt recognize it. I turned the Wireless adapter off, so that I can just deal with wired as of right now since both were having the same issues.

I went into cmd and ping google, yahoo, and both ip addresses and it would come back fine. In the browser i tried going to the sites via ip address or name and it says cant connect. I checked MTU size with ping and 1472 was working fine. I also reset the tcp/ip. I have ran lspfix and winsock fix along with uninstalling the driver and reinstalling. Nothing seemed to work

    Hi

What Service Pack is Vista at? (SP2 is latest)

Does this PC have a software firewall installed (a 3rd party one and not the Windows built in one) if so what one?
    • Disable the firewall and any security apps to test connectivity

If you boot into Safe Mode (F8 at boot and choose Safe Mode with Networking) can you connect to the net ok?

Has this issue been right from the beginning while connecting to this router or just started reciently?
    • Reboot the router
    • Check for fireware updates for the router

From an elevated CMD prompt (right click CMD and choose Run as Administrator) and try the below
type ipconfig /flushdns and hit enter
then type netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled and hit enter

    Reboot and try again.

    It is SP2,

It used to connect fine, just started one day..which made me believe either virus or hardware issue. ran Avast and Malywarebytes and didnt come up with anything.

No third party firewall on it, even disabled windows firewall with no luck.

It does the same thing in safe mode.

the flush and globalautotuning didnt correct the problem either.

Open a command prompt, Windows Key + R, type cmd and then type the following without the quotes and paste all the results back here, "ipconfig /all". Also check, open IE, click Tools, Internet Options, Connection Tab and then the LAN Tab and in the window that opens make sure that all the check boxes are clear, if not clear them and close IE and re-open IE.
