    Hello,
I am considering installing AOL Instant Messenger. However, before I do this, I would like your professional opinions. I am concerned about doing this because years ago when I used AOL as a browser, I found it extended its' tentacles into just about every part of my computer. Based on this list I see in the End User License Agreement, there are numerous components. Obviously, I do not need the bottom four components. If I wish to remove this in the future, I do not want to have to manually remove it from multiple open and hidden portions of the computer.

    * AOL Instant Messenger - an instant messaging client
    * AOL Loader - an application launcher
    * AOL Media Playback Control - a controller and codecs that enable playback of audio and video content
    * AIM Toolbar - a plug-in to the Software that provides easy access to AOL products, services, and features
    * Talkback from SupportSoft - a utility for reporting errors to AOL

My questions are can I selectively download and install ONLY the Instant Messenger? If I download and install the IM, will it install itself in multiple locations (such as shared users, registry, etc.) other than those necessary to effectively run the software? And, is this software considered safe?

Thank you for any assistance you can provide.
