I am building my own computer and it is going GREAT, except for the fact that after assembling everything, The computer will turn on, the HDD will whirr, the CD drive will open and close if needed, led's light, everything is great! Except that the screen is blank, hanging at a black screen! Anyone know what to do about this?

Perhaps if you posted more details of your system it would be easier to help.

I understand you have no video.

Is this because you have missed a power connection to a video card/
Do you have video on the motherboard or PCI or AGP or PCI-E
Are you plugging into the correct VGA socket?
When you switch on watch the light (not screen ) on the monitor. Does anything happen, like a colour change or flash?
What happens to any light on the keyboard when you switch on?

Take out the memory and reseat. If single channel try only one module at a time.
    Ditto the processor.

Sorry about that, ive got a Abit - LG95z MOBO with a celeronD and an Ati Rage 128 pro 32mb pci vid card, model VAR128P-32P... and 1gb of generic ram, and im going to remove everythign and find out where the problem is...

I think it's the generic ram...

Also, ive tried getting video out of both the vid card AND the built-in VGA port...

And the monitor light goes orange when I turn it on, and my keyboard has no lights on it... ( Can't afford a good keyboard)

    And, no beep code.

Remove the ATI, Reset the BIOS and start with the onboard video. You may have to enable the ATI later in bios, but you will need the onboard to do this.

You usually get beeps if there is a RAM problem. How is the RAM populated, I haven't yet had time to look at the manual for allowable combinations.

If there is no change in the monitor light it usually means no video output from the pc.

Pity about the keyboard lights. This is usually one of the very first checks in POST, before the graphics subsystem as the output can go to an LED display. Activity means that the processor is running.

Just check and recheck your cabling and connections.

Use the manual to check your jumper settings as well. I had an experience with a board that shipped with the jumpers in reset position, so it was resetting the bios each time. It was a simple matter of moving the jumper one pin over, and it booted fine.

When my MOBO is like this, nothing boots up at all. No fan, nothing.

Sorry, accidental double-post, it's early here.

Edit: Everything has been fixed, Ill try the ram and ATI card, and sorry, I don't know how the ram is populated either...
Partially because I have no clue in hell what you are talking about! =P Seriously, I did all of this with the help of a friend, and he's stumped too.

This is what you meant by "Reset bios" And "Jumper", right?

Yes, it's the little thing right above it in the picture. So changing it, and changing it back made it work?

  9. noodlesis

    noodlesis Private First Class

No, still no fix, but im going to ask one thing.

If I have no HDD in, it will still go to bios, right?

I'm now totally confused with the state of things. Please summarize the situation, with answers to earlier questions as it is unclear what the results of various actions are (were).

All you need to boot (to something useful) is a display, keyboard and mouse.

    Ok.
Right now, i've followed ALL suggestions, and am back where I left off.

You should get an error message informing you of no valid boot, or something similar.

Make sure everything is properly and fully seated.

So where did you leave off?

I take it your pc is not yet running?
    Did it ever run?

Looking at the motherboard handbook getting the memory and processor to match is quite tricky.

    Describe the ram
    How many modules?
    DDR or DDR-2?
What do any labels on it (them) say?

What is the SL number printed on your processor?

Have you got a motherboard manual and very important the CD that came with it?

I have never seen bios reset better explained than page 1-6 of the manual. colour photos and all!

Final question describe the leads from the front panel you are trying to connect to the motherboard.

  14. noodlesis

    noodlesis Private First Class

HDLED PWRSW RESW and power LED +/-

Ive got the manual and CD, ram is DDR2, 240 pin, nothing on it, one 1024MB module, and a Intel Celeron D processor... All but the PowerLED are two wires attached to one plastic piece, powerLED is two seperate plastic pieces.

  15. studiot

    studiot MajorGeek

OK so are you quite quite sure you have the PWRSW connected between pins 6 and 8 of the panel 1 connector as page 1-9 of the manual? you don't need any of the others to boot.

A single 1G module should work on this motherboard provided it is the right speed.

    Which is?

But you haven't supplied the SL number for the processor so I can't check

SL? Where would I find that?

  17. studiot

    studiot MajorGeek

you will find some writing on one side of the processor chip which reads something like

    Intel Celeron D Indonesia 820
    2.8/512/800
    SL88T

    Transcribe whatever you see.

  18. noodlesis

    Intel (M) (C) '06 420
    Celeron (R)
    SL9XP MALAY
    1.60GHZ/512/800/06
    Q651A389 (04)

This was also included in a barebone kit with the mobo.

  19. studiot

    studiot MajorGeek

Your motherboard had the right chipset (945) for the D series processors and the manual states it supports them.

You can find out all about the SL9XP processor here (and SL codes)

    http://processorfinder.intel.com/Help.aspx

The 1.6Ghz/800 bus are correct for that SL code.

That leaves the memory to concentrate on. You must have pc2-6400 for the system to work with DDR2 memory.

If it still won't start either memory, board or processor are faulty.

I did ask did it ever start, even once?

  20. noodlesis

    noodlesis Private First Class

It has turned on in the sense that the CD drive has been able to open, HDD whirrs, and LED's on the case turn on, but nothing else. No video, nothing.
Also, ive looked at the mobo extensively, and cannot seem to find a place to put the small speaker that was included! Can you please show me a picture, or refer to which page of the manual that I can find where to put this speaker?

You must have pc2-6400 for the system to work with DDR2 memory.

??? What does that mean, and how can I get/find out if I have it?

    Ill try different ram.

  21. studiot

    studiot MajorGeek

Can't see a connector for a simple speaker listed in the manual. You will have to ask Abit if there is one.

PC2-6400 is the type of DDR2 Ram you need to run your processor. There are many others which won't work.

Are you absolutely certain you took antistatic precautions with the RAM and have inserted it the right way round. Is it seated firmly with the snap backs clicked firmly into place at each end?

  22. noodlesis

    Hehe, antistatic....

    'Bout that...

But I don't wanna get new ram... :p

Edit: Plus, that site is UK, and the shipping would be more than the Ram Costs...
