Convert DVD software install disks to ISO files for USB

Could someone give me (the best, smoothest, and easiest) detailed step by step outline on how to turn a DVD / CD software install disc into an .iso file? I need to install some software onto my new laptop of which the new laptop does not have a DVD/CD media drive.

A few of the software DVD's / CD's that "I own" I have successfully "copied" onto a USB drive and they have been installed on the new laptop.

I still have some software that the "copy method" onto a USB drive will not cooperate. During install from the USB drive I get messages that say - "Unable to install. A qualifying product has not been found." I am assuming that this particular software is probably more heavily protected than the other software that I have already been able to successfully "copy" onto a USB drive and do an install from the USB.

Also, out of curiosity, on the copy to USB method - am I able to put more than one program on a USB drive if I put them into their own folders? Will the software install from folders or does the software generally need to be singular to the USB drive?

Any help will be greatly appreciated. I need to get this conquered with my software programs so that I can get operating.

I just did this about 2 months ago.

    I used ImgBurn portable
    Code:
    http://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=583
It opens with a picture of 6 things and wors underneath and a log window so you see what it is doing.

The 2nd image on the left is the one you click: Create Image File from Disc.

If the DVD was bootable, then to create a bootable USB stick, you first make the stick bootable by using Rufus https://rufus.akeo.ie/ or Pendrive Linux http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/
then "burning the ISO just created to the stick.

You can put more than one linux on a stick, using Yumi
    http://www.pendrivelinux.com/yumi-multiboot-usb-creator/
I'm not sure it will work with other non-linux programs.

    Sorry plodr,

You are absolutely correct. My error. I forgot all about that thread. I will use what you have just supplied as well as looking back at that thread. Just way too many things going on at once here. I'll be more aware next time I post.

Good stuff plodr - perfect for those times when you get bored with Windows and fancy playing around without endangering anything.
