convert .mod to .mpeg or...?

Just picked up a Panasonic HD camcorder. Nice little machine, but it records as .mod files...which Windows Movie Maker does not recognize. Is there a way to convert these .mod files to .mpeg or something WMM can deal with in a way that I won't lose quality? I tried Virtual Dub to convert to an .avi, but the result was nasty.

Do I just need to shell out the cash for a more professional editing system?

    I'm on XP pro.

    Thanks so much,

    Peel

    I found this
If you get audio and no video, it means that you are missing a codec.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried that and got audio only. Win Media player plays them just fine, but Movie Maker says "no way".

Is there some sooper seekrit codec out there that will enable MM to recognize these files? If not, I really think I'm looking at file conversion. I've started to research other, more expensive, editing software, but even these packages don't seem to list .mod files in their lists!

    Peel is grumpy. :guns

To me, codecs is one black hole; I'll never understand them.
Hopefully someone who uses Movie Maker will know what is lacking. (I don't have the program so I can't test)

For my codecs needs, I use something called the k-lite codec pack BUT, downloading that, might break whatever currently works for you and I don't think it is worth the risk.

I'll see if I can find what MovieMaker might need.

Since I'm unable to edit my post, I'll add the additional info here.
The link on the windows page did not send me to info on the media encoder but I was able to track it down here
    Code:

As you mentioned, you might do better just getting a non-free video editor program.
I've seen Cyberlink PowerDirector mentioned but I can't see if it supports .mod files; it is not in the list as far as I can see.
